I remember the first time we were going to go on vacation and I was going to be renting one. I went to Walmart around midnight just so that I could ride around in one. Yeah, you feel kind of stupid at first. But when you are on vacation it's OK to do silly things. And by using it, it allows me to be with my family and have fun like I used to. And my 6 year old loves to sit on my lap at times. When we went to Gatlinburgh she was afraid of heights and we were riding the aerial tram up to Ober Gatlinburgh. She was mighty glad to have Grandmas arms snuggly around her as we went up. Going down it was not needed at all. She was all over the tram.

What about it made you feel stupid, Eric?
The first time I ever used a scooter made me feel free! Normally walking through a big expo at a convention center would have left me drained, even using a rollator. I borrowed my Dad's scooter and after getting home I could not believe I had just spent 2 hours at an expo. I could still walk well! I wasn't dragging my leg! What a freeing experience! I went through the MSAA and got a free one.

Well I remember going to Walmart to get an oil change and do some shopping, by the time I left my car in the back of the store and walked up front to get a scooter? They were paging me that my car was done!
For me a scooter became a necessity in life pretty quickly.

I understand. I felt stupid when first using a cane. I was younger
and a sweet little kid said to his Mother, "Grandma has a cane just like that". Was also embarrassed the first time using a walker, a store scooter and again with my own minivan with scooter & lift. It was also a freeing feeling, as Sparky said.

Walmart has such a silly 'reputation' about being the hick and trashy place to shop. I get so mad about it. I don't know how many videos there are on face book joking about an obese person riding a scooter at Walmart. I usually try to respond to each of them that they don't know the whole story and shouldn't make fun of people. My daughter was in Las Vegas several years ago and it was quite the thing to rent a scooter to get somewhere quicker. I don't like that either.

That people would think I'm a lazy ***, because I am young and do not look or act disabled at all. Or that I was goofing off. I was also worried someone would ask me something stupid like "hey bro, break your leg or something?
I hate having to explain to people about MS crap. "Well, I have a nervous system damaging disease and I am in the early stages of it and while my MS traits are mild compared to some cases I still can't walk all that fast, I can suddenly get dizzy, I have to keep bathrooms in mind and where they be and I use a strap to keep my car keys on my wrist so I don't drop them all the time People are like So I guess I am merely "gettin used to it" may as well now than later. |
