Ok, all I'm coming to you for your expertise - Chris just called and said he has not gone to the restroom since he has been up (9:30 a.m).

He said he feels like he has to go but can't. He called the neuro and left a message (i think they maybe out to lunch). I told him if no one called him back by 1:30 to call again.

If the neuro doesn't call back should I take him to the ER?

Has he tried putting his hand in warm water? When I went to the uro last year, and they did a urodynamics study on me, after they filled me up with saline solution, and I had to get rid of it, I couldnt go. (performance anxiety) I sat there for about 10 or 15 minutes, not able to go. In desperation, I had the nurse bring me a cup of warm water.

I thought putting my hand in it would get things started....didnt work. I was getting nervous and shaky and accidentally spilled some of the warm water on my knee. That did it.

Suggest it to him, if it works, it's cheaper than an ER visit.

Have him sit in a bath tub with warm water in it. Might help.

This works for me even when I don't want it too.

If it doesn't work you need to get him to the ER. They can catheterize him and get him some relief. He may also be in the middle of a flare. Sorry he is going through this. to you and him. You know I'm always thinking about him (and you)

This happens to me a lot and I usually wait it out for the day or if I really feel pain I catherize myself, maybe he could talk to his doc about this. The hand in warm water really does work most of the time.

The neuro called back and said to take him to the ER - we had to go by the house to get his wallet and he finally went to the bathroom!! It had been 16 hours since he went.

so we called the neuro back and they said he didn't have to go to the ER but he had to make an appointment with a urologist.

I just hope he continues to be able to empty his bladder (if he really did empty it completely - he was terrified to have a cathedar) and we don't have to go to the ER at midnight tonight

Just be sure to keep a close eye on him. I know he doesn't like the idea of a cath, but retaining urine for that length of time can cause major problems. Hope he continues to do well.

I don't blame him for being afraid of a catheter. Male cauterization is no picnic. My husband just spent ten days catherized due to male problems. He had a terrible, uncomfortable time.
However, do keep us informed. We are concerned.
