Default students who cheat

I just have to vent about cheating students! I have a masters student in my class who plagiarized by lifting material WORD FOR WORD from amazon.com and barnesandnoble.com right off the internet! I am putting this report together right now to turn her in to the honor board and it is taking forever.

Maybe I'm naive or super ethical but every time this happens I am just speechless. It never would have occured to me to cheat when I was in high school or college!! The worst thing is, I even explain to the students what plagiarism is (so they can't claim to not know) and they still do it.

I guess the internet makes it easy to cheat? Perhaps with the world of myspace, facebook, blogs and the easy spread of information that young people don't realize that it is wrong to claim someone else's words as their own.

Please tell me if you are a parent and have kids that you tell them it is wrong to cheat! I'm so discouraged by this generation of young people.

Natalie,

Rules taught by my Major Prof, then taught by me to all of my grad-students:
RULE #1: A Cheater Will Not Be Rewarded.
RULE #2: A Cheater Will Be Exposed To ALL.
RULE #3: A Cheater Gets An "F" (for the entire class).

Honor your students by not letting a cheater dishonor their hard work.

I would call her out in front of the class and explain why she is going to fail. Let that be the first time she hears about it.

Cheating students are scum.

i called lil'monkey at the club about this. yeah..slave driver mom..making her work on a friday night.

she said the schools are so lax about disciplining kids. they cheat, then get sent to iss ( in school suspension ) where all their friends who cheat are. if they get caught again, they go to saturday school. where all their delinquent friends are.

i know OT, but still school related, it ticks me off that they let kids pass the grade who DID NOT pass the TAKS test. also kids who miss way over the number of days allowed.

not to try and say lil'monkey got treated unfairly, but she broke her foot on a wednesday night. went to school on thursday. it swelled so bad she had to miss friday. that friday was a written final in choir. she was not there and was NOT allowed to make it up. so the girl with a set of pipes..got a 64 in choir!!! she will sooooo kill me for posting that.

I'm with Vic! Not only does it cheapen your school's name, but it also cheapens the educations of all of us who came before her!

This calls for a scarlet letter! "F"

We were all told that there was now software that the school used to check papers we wrote for plagiarism. The instructors would type in key words and up would pop papers and if we got caught, we would flunk the course, period, end of story.

I think Vic has a great idea and I hope your student learns her lesson, Natalie.

A very big thank you to all our members here who are brave enought to be teachers. (Moose will one day join your ranks.)

You know why I never got caught cheating?

I never cheated.

It's just that simple.

I'd rather fail with honor than gain anything through under-handed means.

(I'm sure someone smarter than me said that first).

And public humiliation should be part of the disciplinary strategies for anyone who can't tow the line.

NBC nightly news had a special on this the other night. There are even web sites that teach kids how to cheat!

I know this wasn't cheating but my kids were really 'good' about 'forgetting' to bring homework home. they wouldn't tell me until the school was closed. They knew my work hours and would do this on days I would be getting of work late. So I would just give them an assignment of my own and give them a certain length of time to do it. We had current World Books and other resources. Sorry, this was before the days of computer. Then they had to turn my assingments in to their teacher! Of course they got no credit for these assignments but it cut down on their forgetting homework.

Hi Natalie,
That is so awful but I wouldn't doubt it especially being in grad school now and seeing how other students act regarding their grades and working. It makes me so proud of seeing my sons, esp. the one with Autism bring home his report card today and had all Satisfactories but two Ns.

I look at my report card back then and I actually had Ns and Us. But I never cheated and I just got a 3.9 this year and I still won't cheat and my sons are raised to do their best and I'm proud of them. I just think kids are raised differently nowadays.

When I was a therapist in a D-rated school in Florida the kids were excited about going to the Principals office, when I was a kid you were terrified to go there and I knew my parents would kill me. You can see the difference between the older/non-traditional students at UGA and the ones that go for their masters right after their bachelors. I can remember being in Research class and people asking each other what the answers for take-home quizzes was.. lol.. I better get off this soapbox before I fall and hurt myself!!
