Default Andrew Wyeth died

He was probably my favorite artist. I love "Soaring".

This is my favorite.."Christina's World"

A woman he met, dragging herself across the field, who was disabled, chose to live in poverty and refused to use a wheel chair.

He was a very famous Maine artist. He went against what his critic's told him and did what he wanted to do and was successful at it!

Most people who don't think they know him have seen "Master Bedroom".

He was 91.

Here in Maine we have been blessed by having the Wyeth family (N.C., Andy and Jamie) in such close proximity. We feel like they are our people.

I've been to several shows at the Farnsworth Art Museum in nearby Rockland, where they have the Wyeth Center. This museum does a Wyeth show every year and I hope they continue.

RIP Andy and condolences to Jamie on the loss of your Dad.

I know there has been some controversy in the art world concerning his works, though that whole thing is a mystery to me. I wouldn't be surprised if the "controversy" might actually be politics and (dare I?) snobbery.

Kind of makes me think of movies that are panned by critics but which the public loves. Some art critics ( certainly not most) have called his paintings "corny" and "sentamentalism" and such, and called him an "illustrator", like Norman Rockwell (as if that's a bad thing?) I liked Norman Rockwell, and I liked Andrew Wyeth.

I saw "Soaring" once at an exhibit at the Shelburne Museum, and I just stood there with my mouth open. I swear my heart stopped beating. I had never heard of Andrew Wyeth (never did know much about art) but there was something about that painting.

I must admit I never heard of this gent sorry to hear of his passing, and the lost of his talent.

I was looking at soaring Sally posted and my mind was immediatley enveloped into the scene of desulation, desserted and void of life, yet those who know the desert, know that even a desert teams with life and as the hawk knows this, the hawk shall be rewarded, pretty cool painting

If you look closely at the painting (or google a larger image)you can see the farmhouse far below. I like the idea of having the view from above the three turkey vultures, perhaps being the fourth and highest, looking down at three more levels of birds, all soaring so high...maybe I am flying, too, or looking through a hole in heaven's floor...
