I'm liking all these responses!
Somebody was recently laughing at me (in a kind way) because she thought she heard me say something and walked into the other room to ask "Did you just say something to me?" I said, "No, I just said 'excuse me' because I burped." She laughed and said, "Who were you excusing yourself to? The CAT??" Well, maybe. It's a reflex. I don't know whose stupid original idea it was that you excuse yourself if you burp but not if you cough, sneeze, snurfle, hiccup or yawn, but there it is. It is ingrained in me. You burp, you say "excuse me". Doesn't matter if only a cat is there, or if NOBODY is there. Once, when I was living alone, I left the bathroom door open about four inches, just to see what would happen. I didn't like it. It didn't feel.....right.

Now that you brought this up I'm thinking about it. I don't think I ever burp. My brother lets off some mean gas though. He sits on the sofa, lifts a cheek and let's loose. I look at him and he says he didn't know it was coming. My answer, why did you lift your cheek then

I shut the door, too. All the time.....even if I'm home alone.
My Mom always made us say "excuse me" if we sneezed, coughed, hiccuped, any bodily noise......and heaven help you if it was a belch or gas........ladies just did not do that! I used to tell her that she would explode if she didn't let off some of that pressure. My sisters and I did make noises.....we were just careful not to get caught! She lightened up once she had grandsons, though. She didn't have a choice!! I caught her once laughing at the kids after they had a "contest".

I think burping is actually a compliment in some countries. After you eat, if you enjoyed the meal, then you are practically expected to produce a burp! hehe! And I thought I was modest! Now that it's just DH and me at home, I'll leave the bathroom door open a little when I'm alone. I don't have any pets to watch me, or I'd close it! The ONLY time I ever walked through the house nekked (I think I was ready to shower and looking for a towel) my son and his friend caught me! I think they were around 8 or 9. And they didn't look away, they just kept staring! My girlfriend remembers taking a bath and her 2yo daughter peering over the edge of the tub at her. The little cutie pointed and said, "Kittie!"

Ok, I have to say that after reading these posts, my eyes are full of tears because they have totally made me laugh! You all are hysterical! I love it! When at home or somewhere alone, it's ALL about being comfortable.....If you have a build up of excess "pressure" no matter which end it would like to escape...we are all comfortable to "let er' go"! Now, it is a different story if we are in the kitchen.... then we simply walk into another room.
