Spoken in a welsh accent (which gets stronger the angrier I get!):
Who's boots are those shoes? Who's coat is that jacket? Who's phone is that mobile? Who's pint is that beer? and so on.. and my fave, 'I'll be there now in a minute...' or 'Are you back from where you been?' |

When you live in Jersey you don't go to the beach...you go down the shore..
You don't eat subs or gyros.....you eat hoagies. If you live below Trenton, you are in South Jersey and are a Phillies/Eagles fan If you live above Trenton, you are in North Jersey and are a Yankees/Mets or Giants/Jets fan. BTW, soda is SODA, not Pop [Pop is your grandfather] and when we buy soda, we put it in a bag, not a sack. When we lived in Michigan, I had a store clerk ask me if I wanted my Pop in a sack? Took me a minute to mentally translate that! From PA where I grew up, we didn't clean the house...we 'redd' up. We didn't have visitors, we had company. We 'outened' the lights when leaving a room. One that always drove me up the wall. Are "yous" going to the store, park etc. NO one pronounces the 'g' at the end of words. Are yous goin swimmin? The letters TH in a word such as 'there' and 'the' are supposed to be pronounced th not as a 'd' Is dere a sale at da store? When we visit there it drives me insane. I'm sure I'll think of more later. |

Well, here in Gawga I never hear the word "pop"....even when referring to someones Granddaddy! Now, if you say "pop-pop" or "pee-paw" that's somebody's Grandfather!
Any carbonated drink is a "Coke". It can be Sprite or Dr. Pepper.....anything carbonated. It's a Coke! And we've never said "yo".....it's "haaaaay". Gotta drag out that middle part.....

In Jersey we went DOWN the shore and knew what jughandles were (off yhe road to right, curved exit that puts you at light to go and intersecting road. We ccould see Manhattan, many worked there, we has New York minutes. Whoosh, very fast
In Maryland they said we all talked fast, but artists in Baltimroe (pronounced Bal- more) make drawlings. There atre no New York minutes here, everything seems so s..l..o..w.

Risby - I lived in NJ (was born there) and moved to Ohio.
I speak both soda and pop. I still cannot say crick (creek) or rough (roof). And I still wear sneakers, not tennis shoes - so I guess my Jersey girl is still in there alive and well. Kicker - Meerahs, axe me a about meerahs (mirrors), and JOO-la-ree. My hair is getting bigger, just thinking about all this.

I am LOVING these! Keep them coming!
Way back in 1965, we ventured to Cleveland to visit Mom's family, and I was surprised that things weren't called what I thought they should be. Wish I could remember which things. Hot dogs, for example. Funny, my Dad was a Vermonter, and said such things as "burries" insteadof "berries". My mother pronounced every word just as in the dictionary. She didn't drop any letters or add any (such as "warsh") Right out of the dictionary.
