It wasn't a hanky to USE, it was a hanky to COLLECT. My mother collected them, back in the day, and it was among some other old family linens and such. Now it's mostly in the lint trap.
I agree, hankies are gross. I keep the Puffs company in business.

B2Y,
I also have an old Hankies collection. Some silk, mast cotton Lawn. When my Aunt died I brought home her Hankercheif box which she had from her childhood. Only I recognized it as what it was. I had built a doll house, some of the furniture in it, used some of my hankies to make curtains. No I don't use them!! Gross,. I have Kleenex. My dad had white cotton hankerchiefs when I was a girl.

I found one new hankie with the 45 cent tag still on it from Halle Brothers in Cleveland, where my Mom worked as a young woman back in the thirties.
I have three handkerchief boxes, two wooden and one cloth covered. I guess everybody in my family must have collected hankies.

Sorry about your silky mishap..
My Family collected home made crochet Doilies, made by my GM and her GM. Remember them on the back and over the arms of GM's favorite chair or on top of a dresser or chest?

Oh, I've got doilies, too. And runners, tablecloths, embroidered towels, napkins, pillowcases with lace and/or embroidery, pillow covers (for throw pillows), you name it. I've got enough doilies to doily every piece of furniture in my house twelve times, including the microwave and the cat boxes.
