We have a lot of snakes in Maryland. Our house is 90 years old, was a farm. county forest next door. Had lots of mice, found many snake skins (who liked eating them) in floors, walls and attics. We have 5 cats, no mice anymore, so no snakes BUT.... DH thought it so funny to throw a dead 5-foot black snake on my windshield as I drove down long drive, he brought a 4 footer (live) to porch and it tried tp climb house-side, and during a pool party with 13 year old boys, he caught a 3 foot FAT brown snake for the boys to see, which promptly threw up dead fat toad making the bulge in him. Do we know how to have parties or what??? Boys liked it.

Kids helped me catch and bag a 1 footer (brown?) as we learned on Animal Planet. I had a man here to discuss pool building, found curled up on mud room rug a 12 inch garter snake cat must of brought in. I yelled and man tried to kick it out with his foot.. It was non-poisonious, I picked it up and took outside. Guess Man had snake fears. We have lots of toads too. Cats always bring 1/2 alive chipmunks and birds in (they have their own door).

I worked at a local country radio station all the way thru high school and college. The place was a dump, and it was next to a pasture with a pond. We always had mice - they would get inside the AM transmitter and get fried, throw the AM off the air and stink up the place. Another DJ's boyfriend killed a copperhead behind the couch in the reception area. I came across a big blacksnake just inside the front door - I opened the door and he just slithered on out. I had so many adventures there!

So, kicker, whaddya think about all these ninnies? Sheesh, lol!

I found 20+ inch snake on my driveway last week. I had grandkids coming, so I chased it around a tree a few times, caught it, then relocated it across the road in an empty lot. Didn't want the kids discovering it (or vice versa!)

DH is afraid of reptiles, but I make him kill all the 6- and 8-legged creepy-crawlies.

I had to laugh... almost sounds like the station where an old boyfriend worked back in the 70's...in Mississippi.

Snakes... grew up with them all around. Only ones that scared me were the water mocs and rattlesnakes. Last summer my cat dragged a 3 ft snake skin up on the porch... guess she found it out in the yard.

My youngest daughter has an 8 foot boa, properly named Lucifer. He's a very docile snake, content just to lay in his cage and be lazy. When he gets to bored he crawls up in his water dish and makes a mess. When he was much smaller I would play with him but not at 8 feet, weighs to much.

I had a 12inch garter snake (Jake the Snake) in class one time. Kids loved But found other female teachers and assistant teachers would hold, men no. When Jake died and stunk up the place (PU) big huge strapping young janitor threw him out but by taking whole cage and dumping it into trash dumpster. Guess it's not like I wanted rocks and bowls, I guess!!! LOL

I've yelled at coyote met in dunes in Cape Cod, five feet away from me and my toddlers, swear I'd have tried to kill him with the 5 inch hollow reed, only stick I could find in beach dunes. Lucky for him (??) a bunch of other beach people appeared, scared him off. I'd kill for my babies!! Still would. Cats have always brought birds and stuff in through their cat door. Here in Maryland I'm on a hill surrounded by woods but there is neighborhood you can't see. There was that bat I used a kitchen towel to remove from steps and let loose out the front door with kids. Kids helped me actively birth kitties when Mom Cat forgot her duties and chewing through placentas, ripping off suffocating placentas. Kids trust me to take care of stuff, maybe that's why they take good care of me now. They're like my Little MacGyvers, taking care of stuff.

They say to never kill a black snake, because that eat rattlers....

Nice snakes Sally!!

We used to have a speckled king snake that hung around our yard. We were glad to have him because they hunt the poisonous snakes. He was very friendly and would let you step right over him without even moving - it was like he knew he was welcome there.

Patrick McManus has a hysterically funny story about a snake at his family's summer cabin. I tried to read it aloud to my mom and kids, but I got to laughing so hard I was incomprehensible. If you get a chance to read his stories, I highly recommend them!
