Default a well meaning friend suggested hyperbaric oxygen

So, unless there's new data on this, my understanding is its efficacy has pretty much been disproved (like bee string therapy, amalgam filling removal, etc.) What are your thoughts? Does anyone else have strong feelings about this - pro or con?

Thanks!

Becca44

oops. I should probably have posted this in the main area. If moderators move it, that's fine with me. Sorry!!

My nanan suffered from MS and she tried the Hyperbaric Oxygen Chamber when she was diagnosed (almost 4 years after the symptoms had begun - her doctors had diagnosed her with MS 6 months after the symptoms started but didn't tell her - my mum found out by looking through the medical notes!) and it helped her a bit but her MS soon went Progressive so it stopped working.

The HBO made her feel really tired but helped with some of her symptoms and she could do a bit more after the therapy. She had sessions every week at an MS clinic until it stopped working and the doctors told her not to try it.

We looked into HBO for me as I have a disorder called Complex Regional Pain Syndrome which is similar to MS in many ways but my doctor said he didn't think it would help me. Whilst we were looking into it, there was quite a few sites stating that it can help with MS symptoms - though of course, it cannot 'cure' it.

I'd look into it if I was you and see if theres any helpful sites about the use of HBO in MS sufferers - it can't do any harm!! Maybe talk to your Doctor about it also and see what he/she thinks.

I wish you the best of luck should you wish to look into the HBO - please keep us posted!

Thanks Alison!
I guess I shouldn't have dismissed it outright. I appreciated my friend's suggestion but I'm always (like, ALWAYS) skeptical of these kinds of things. Right now I'm pretty lucky and don't need to manage symptoms per se but I'll keep an open mind about this and you're right, if it doesn't hurt.... it can't be all bad.

Oh, Bec, the one for MS has an active beehive inside it.

My neuro told me that insurance is very reluctant to cover it because there has not been enough research. She also said that several articles she'd read suggested that it was hit-or-miss in terms of efficacy.

It might be cool to try it just to be able to say you have!

I want the behive edition.

I have heard it has done great things for folks, and then again, I have heard its no better than 15 a day of sunshine to get more D.

I love when folks want me to do beesting therapy. Since I am allergic, it would be kinda drastic.

yeah, ix-nay on the ee-bay ive-hay for you, Dejibo.

I'll take the beehive addition only if the chamber is SHAPED like a beehive and has honey in it ...and toast.

Maybe AMN knows about a chamber that has a practicing dentist in it so we can have our filling's removed at the same time.

They do! But first, you have to go on a cleansing diet to eliminate all remnants of artificial sweeteners. Then, you will be cured.

You're more than welcome!

I totally understand what you are saying about being skeptical about certain treatments - especially if there isn't that much research saying that it can help! My family always try to help and recommend treatments on what they think will help with my best intentions at heart but I don't think they realise that some things they suggest haven't been proven to work or can indeed, make things worse. I sometimes wish people would stop suggesting things unless they actually know about the disorder and that it can help - even if it is well meant!!

I wish you the best of luck with whatever you decide to do. Just remember to do lots of research into it beforehand and speak to your doctors and other people about it to see what they think!

Keep us posted as to what you decide to do!

I have heard from a friend of a friend that someone she knows does it for MS and swears by it. Like you however the research I've seen doesn't seem to lend much to it for quite a few things it was originally touted for, imo.

Doesn't sound like it could hurt so if its available and cheap I'd probably try it.
