I just came across this video were they're using a barbell to mobilize the first rib. I'm not going to try it because I know I'd hurt myself, but someone might be interested. I noticed that the second response post was a guy who had TOS surgery in February.http://www.mobilitywod.com/2012/09/s...der-fixes.html

Interesting.
I wouldn't use a weight or metal bar - I think that is for the more "normal" lifters. down in the comments 1 guy mentions a stretchy band. Stand on one end and bring forward over the rib to create the pressure. others mention use of a PVC pipe for the pressure - I suppose a broom or mop handle would work too. Just anchor one end or have a friend hold while you apply the pressure as needed for you. I did use a plastic coated 5lb dumb bell weight a long time ago and just set it on my neck/shoulder junction to try to help my pain, long before I knew about any top rib mob stuff.

You might be able to get bigger diameters with the PVC pipes over the broom sticks.
Another comment that caught my attention: "I use a band from under foot to the shoulder and ball in between the band and my shoulder." This is what Ando has us doing, but with a ball added. Might have to try that. Nice find Coop42. |

Another good one:
"You can also do this in your single bedroom apartment by balancing the top tube of your bike across your first rib." And this one just for the phrase I highlighted: "I came up with another way to do this. Using a green band hook it through a kettle bell, then put the lacrosse ball into first rib area. Then put the other end of the green band over the ball to drive it into the pain cave." HAHAHA! "The pain cave!" We have a new phrase. |

Here's another one with a girl using a ball against a pole for mobilization. Look how off center her head looks when she's done. Weird.http://www.mobilitywod.com/

I would be afraid to try that on my own. Looks like it could easily flare up the scalene muscles if you tense up!

I think the secret is to relax into it and not force anything.
