Default Computer Chair / Station Ideas

Hello!

I did something really stupid and bought a new computer chair. I threw out my old one that worked very well before vetting the new one. Now I am out of options!

My old one was a big tall executive high back executive chair. It had the adjustable height. I pulled it up to a desk and it worked just fine.

But every single chair I have tried to replace it with makes my left fingers numb. I have tried big executive comfortable chairs, wood chairs, metal chairs, fabric chairs, even the fit stability ball - all of them make my pinkie go numb.

What has been ok:
Sitting on a tall wood bar like chair at my high bar like table. I think it may be that my feet are not on the floor but "perched" on a rung on this high chair. It works great and no symptoms but I am not sure I want to use this little wood chair for a long period.

Sitting sideways on the couch - may back against the arm rests and my feet up on the couch half bent (computer perched between my stomach and knees).

Sitting in my living room chair with my feet perched on the coffee table.

It seems having my feet up helps somehow.

Anyways....I am putting all options on the table...

standing desk?
get an ipad?
bean bag?
some sort of multilevel sectional couch that allows you to contort yourself all over the place?! haha.

please, what works for you?

I think my standard chair way of life is dead forever.

THANK YOU!

I'm in the same boat and believe my normal chair way of life is also dead.

I have tried many office style task chairs and none really 'solve' the problem of having to sit at a workstation for any significant length of time. I have the Herman Miller Embody chair (supposedly the Ferrari of all task chairs) and it offers no real comfort. The only way I can cope is to take very frequent breaks.

I wouldn't recommend a tablet if you have to do any serious work. The increased difficulty with touchscreen typing will probably cause more strain.

I'd like to hear if anyone has experience with a standing desk.

I have a way less intense version of this using a keyboard tray and foot rest and chair with headrest and I've found it to be sustainable. Arm and head support is key

Try a wireless keyboard and a wireless mouse. You can have them on a solid book or tray on your lap. The more you avoid elevating and extending your arms for typing the better you will be.
Dragon Naturally speaking software premium for windows or dictate for mac comes with a wireless high quality headset microphone That eliminates a lot of the need to type at all.

I am a heavy user of Android devices. I use the tablet and phone, and actually dictating this posting on my phone. The nice thing is that I can do this while laying on my side right now. My most comfortable position is also reclining so we invested in a nice recliner and I put my tablet upon a lap station and simply dictate when doing any typing. I did use dragon on Windows for a while and it works well but I find the free built in speech recognition on Android to work wonderfully. I have also used the small Wireless keyboards that you can type with just your thumbs. That does ok for me at times as well, especially if it's typing something more complicated with numbers and such or I am around other people and don't want to dictate in front of everyone.

Eddies post is brilliant. I don't have split keyboards like that, or a belly cut out, but I lean my chair back and prop my feet on a milk crate or let them hang. The split keyboard would be awesome.

I usually do ok with the laptop low so my arms aren't being raised. No weight tugging on my shoulder. Sometimes I lay in bed with my knees bent and shoulders back and pillows behind my head. At work forget it. The best I can do is rest my arms on the desk and when it hurts (and it always does) just try and put the bad arm bent behind my back and hope for the best. I work for a non profit and I just don't think they will put out money to get my desk all set up properly. I don't know what to do. I'm certainly not going to have surgery only to put myself in a position that causes problems. On the other hand I need my job and insurance

I try to change positions throughout the day -- every 2 hours or so.

I have a sit-to-stand desk (workrite for the office, geekdesk for home), adjustable monitor arms, a kinesis contoured advantage pro keyboard and 3 different chairs.

Among the chairs that I rotate between:
- Human scale saddle seat
- Office master DB53 discovery mid back
- Lab workbench stool with foot ring. (hard plastic). Kinda looks like the -- Deluxe 5 Way Adjustable Polyurethane Stool (if you google it). I don't know the exact kind that I have.

Each chair requires a different desk height.

Early on -- I was told that I need to "switch it up" throughout the day. Perfect posture in the perfect chair for a perfect 8 hours a day -- is NOT perfect.

So, that's what I do. I do find standing at the keyboard for a few hours a day very helpful.
