This is a self adjustment for the first rib. My steps are:
I put two fingers out with right hand. Like holding the number 2 up, but with fingers together. I reach across to the other side to where my first rib is located on the very side of my neck. I come out just a little from the neck. This is important. Before I started doing this, it was hit or miss as to whether my self adjustment would help me or flare me up. I got this tip from the video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qlTzS7PUaZc where he says that if you are right against the neck you can irritate the brachial plexus. If you think about how the brachial plexus comes out between the scalenes, I'm reaching past that. The upper trap overlays the first rib a bit. I hit that muscle with the fingers and push it back a bit. Now my fingers are on the top rib. I do the following 3 things simultaneously: Exhale while pressing down with the fingers while tilting my head sideways in the direction of the rib. About these three things: -- The exhalation is to make sure the scalenes are relaxed (they can contract on inhalation) and to pull the ribs down in general. -- The amount of force to press down with is something you have to play with. -- The purpose of the tilt is to create slack in the scalenes. Therefore, I do not tilt my shoulders or upper body much. You could even do it first if you wanted to. Then I keep the rib pinned as I inhale and return my head to a straight up position. Sometimes I also turn my head left and right while maintaining the pin. Feels good for some reason. Additional notes: I do this on both sides. I start with my better side and do my bad side last. I often feel more clear headed after doing this. I once had a purple hand from VTOS and adjusted my own rib to fix this after which my hand returned to a more normal color. But let me control some expectations: -- This doesn't cure my TOS, but it helps. -- This may not work for you. -- Like any experimental thing you try, it could flare you up. Good luck. |
