I am coming into this late but just thought I would throw in my two cents. I use both a laptop and a desktop...as well, at work I used a desktop.
The main thing I have found with a laptop was I went for a very lightweight one - about 3 or so pounds...this made it easy to carry and to have sitting in my lap. Some of the laptops with these huge glossy widescreens, etc are nice but aren't practical in my mind because they weigh so much more...just my opinion. My laptop needs replacing though - not much in the really light weight category out there - end up with a 12" screen then but hey, to me it is worth it. The cool pad DiMarie spoke of are something I will definately get once I get a new laptop. I am looking at a tablet, again so that there is less bulk and more ease of use. I have a nice small wireless mouse I use with my laptop and I find the setup works great. I am not a fan of my desktop...only because I have to sit at a desk which is uncomfortable for long periods of time. When I do, I have a great ergo chair and maintain the 90/90/90 rule when sitting at my desk. I had a monitor riser at work (I need to get that home) and a foot stool which helped a lot. I find looking down at a monitor to be brutal on my neck. As a side note, and this is just my experience, I have found wrist rests to be a bad idea...and had mine "taken away" (well not really but it was strongly suggested) by the OT who did my ergo assessment. Apparently resting your wrists on these pads causes compression and can lead to more problems. I found that switching to a mouse that properly fit my hand and sitting properly (proper height, etc) worked far better for me. Hope this helps! |
