OT - Valacyclovir/Valtrex

Off Topic FYI

This first one is a single case study but it is a very interesting article despite the limitations and the financial disclosures of the doctor.

Quote:

Certain limitations need to be noted. This is a single case and may represent an epiphenomenon. The absence of a placebo control is inherent to single case studies. Lastly, a viral encephalopathy or even a viral infection was not definitively demonstrated in this case, although it bears close resemblance to a case series in which viral infection was definitively demonstrated.

Quote:

The present case illustrates a dramatic improvement in symptoms normally associated with Bipolar Disorder, ADHD, and possibly Autism Spectrum Disorders with antiviral therapy. Taken together with previous work on the association between Herpes family viruses and depressive symptoms, further study of the proposed association between these viruses and neuropsychiatric symptoms is encouraged.

Note small number of participants -
9 male. one female.
several with co-morbids.
some medicated. some not.
Nonetheless, it's an interesting study. :)

Partitioning the Heritability of Tourette Syndrome and Obsessive Compulsive

The results also indicate that there is some genetic overlap between these two phenotypically-related neuropsychiatric disorders, but suggest that the two disorders have distinct genetic architectures.

Edited to add my comment -

I would wonder what type of illness or infection actually caused the febrile convulsions in the first place

Chemar 06-14-2014 10:00 AM

Well I know strep infections can cause febrile convulsions as can other childhood viruses and bacterial infections....I wonder if what these researchers were finding was more related to PANS rather than TS?

Lara 06-14-2014 08:33 PM

Well that was sort of what I was thinking.
I'd love to read the full text when it is free, otherwise it is a bit of a puzzle.
My first thought was about the actual conditions that preceded the seizures in all of those patients to cause the fever in the first place.

Interesting too, is that there was another article on that same page suggesting that low iron and low serum ferritin may be risk factors for febrile seizures in children.
