Hi Everyone,
Have you ever noticed that if your kids/you stick their/your tongue out it tremors a little bit or moves to one side? I'd love to know if anyone sees this happening in their child or themselves. If you do see it happening has/have your child/you ever been on any tic related medication? I'm interested because I've started speech therapy again. I had major articulation issues as a child, and I was in speech therapy from 3 years of age until my 6th grade year in school. At that time, it became uncool to be in speech therapy, and I choose to stop doing speech therapy. I still have some slight articulation issues that bother me, so I've decided to get back into speech therapy. My speech therapist has noticed that when I stick my tongue out it almost has a tremor(spasm) like movement. I've also noticed this in the past, but it's never been any concern to me. My thinking is that it possibly could be tardive dyskinesia type movements caused from tic medications used while I was a child. Any ideas? Carolyn |

I have some feedback Carolyn...
yes, it moves and tremors mine also moves very slightly, but not to the degree his does. When he looked at it, he said it's like his tongue has tics I have never been on any prescription meds (apart from rare antibiotics) while my son had that one year in 2000 in haldol, luvox and zyprexa

Chemar,
Thanks for getting your son to look at his tongue for me. lol I'm glad it's not something bizarre that only I have. My speech therapist made it sound to me like it was the most bizarre thing she's ever seen. My sister's also a speech therapist, and I asked her about it. She said that the tongue shouldn't move to the right, left, or spasm when stuck out. It's "abnormal" for that to happen, but not uncommon. She said that she thinks my speech therapist was probably just surprised. However, it's nothing to worry about especially since I have TS. Carolyn |

hi Carolyn,
yes, I think it likely is more a neuromuscular thing rather than med related stuff. been doing some checking myself, and it seems it is likely very normal for our tongues to move slightly, and yes, that more distinct movement or side turning is more unusual maybe, but not necessarily cause for alarm, as, like with TS, inherent things may be at work and "normal" for the indivdual. as with all things one notices re body/health, always good to mention to your doc next time you talk... ![]()
