Nursing an injury.



One weekend, my friend, who was a nurse, was looking after her six-year-old nephew when he fell off a playground slide and hit his head.

Worried that he might have a concussion, she checked him all night.

Every hour, she'd gently shake him and ask, "What's your name?"

Soon, he began moaning in protest each time she entered the room.

When she went in at 5:00 A.M., she saw something white on his face. Leaning close, she saw a crayon-scrawled message taped to his forehead.





It read: "My name is Daniel."



Let's start a thread of funny stories and jokes that pertain to PCS/mTBI.

Ever see the movie 50 First Dates? The main character Lucy is in a car accident and her memory of the previous days events is wiped clean each morning. With my daughter's memory issues, we have joken with her about being like Lucy. While not funny, I do appreciate having a clean slate when she can't remember the stupid things I have said to her when I was angry or frustrated.

Great story Mark! That's one smart kid.

Since my accident, my husband insists on explaing everything to me a million times, a million different ways. I'm thinking of getting a flashing button, I can push when necessary that reads, "Enough, I get it."

I hesitate...this might be a little off color...fair warning

My daughter was in health class a couple of months ago. The teacher (what was he THINKING?) was conducting a review of their recent studies on human sexuality using a Jeopardy type game (i.e. "what is...").

My daughter's team had the question, she couldn't remember the word "scrotum" and yelled out "What is ball sack" for the whole class. Awkward...yes...related to concussion...we hope so.

having instant memory deficit has its up side, you don.t notice the repeats on the TV,

but the down side is, the programs are so old you can remember them from the first time they were shown


2 guys with memory deficit at the beach

one says to the other would you like an ice cream

yes he replies one with strawberry source

ok says the other guy, you stay and mind the bags, and off he go.s to the stall

he returns a few minutes later and hands the guy his ice cream with chocolate source on it

the guy waiting shakes his head

the other guy says did I get it wrong again

yes I told you I wanted nuts on mine

a bit like my joke huh

PCS Learner,

Your daughter's response is not unlike that of a PCS subject. There can be losses in the part of the brain than controls outbursts and helps maintain social functioning.

I need to remember that not all people are ready for what my mind wants to say. I have a TBI friend who is very literal with his responses. I have posted an anecdote that relates to his style.

My father, who suffered with dementia from lack of oxygen for over a decade before passing away, had lost almost all social caution.

I have learned to hold my responses but often they get stuck in my head needing an outlet for release. My wife is usually the victim. Her response will often be, "I'm glad you didn't say that in public."
