I may require surgery for something unreleated, is there any reason why being put under general anesthetic is not recommended for PCS sufferers?

General anesthetic has been linked to depression that can last for months. If you are already having trouble with PCS related depression, you might want to discuss this with your doctor.
Good luck with your surgery. Cheers |

Hockey is right. The gas used can be problematic, especially for someone who has an injured brain. Talk with the anesthesiologist about your options.

What about things it could cause that aren't already a known side effect? I don't have depression from PCS.

Some people are sensitive to the gas. It can cause, or accelerate dementia and MCI (Mild Cognitive Impairment).
The gas "isoflurane" is the most problematic. Ask the anesthesiologist what he intends to use. Ask for an alternative if possible. Google 'isoflurane' and 'dementia'

I have read some abstracts of studies that indicate isoflorane can cause mild cognitive impairment, but I'm confused why this study states it has the best rate of cognitive recover after TBI: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16430376
I acknowledge the context is different here but I have no idea if this is relevant or not. |
