Hello all, my name is Tom. I fell in the bathroom on feb 1st and knocked myself out, split my head open and had to go to the hospital for staples. The next few days are kind of a blur but I dont remember really bad symptoms. About a week later I had severe numbness of my legs and a fever and went to the hospital for a CTscan and blood cultures. No infection and nothing showed up on the CT scan and I was diagnosed with PCS.
Yesterday I had some of the same symptoms that sent me to the hospital but they werent as severe (they were like a panic attack, heavy heart beats, confusion, paranioa) and only lasted 8 or so hours, tho some are still lingering now. I went to a neurologist and they said I should be fine, but they were worried about the fever and I needed an EEG (still trying to make that appointment). I have a follow up in a week. The symptoms arent terrible most of the time, just annoying. The headache isnt an "ache" persay, just the sensation of heavy pressure on the inside of my forehead and a really stiff neck (probably whiplash?). I dont really have too much of a problem with light, I can read just fine, nothing seems as severe as everyone else is explaining they have. Im just really out of it and once a week since the injury I have had these horrible panic attack symptom dealies. However when I lay down to sleep, if I lay where its putting pressure on the sides of my head, I get sweats and my body gets hot, if I sit up for a little while I get better. I also got really sick last week, though most of my friends are sick with sinus related stuff, but it seems to be taking longer for me to kick it. And I didnt have any nasuea until this weekend, week 3. Is that bad? None of the doctors or the neurologist seemed terribly worried about me, so im assuming im fine, especially since some people here cant read, or get out of bed etc. The neurologist also said it was good I got the CT scan a week later after the injury because then they could catch anything, even a slow bleed. Guess im just looking for reassurance and support. |

Tom,
It sounds to me like you have a good case of PCS plus some possible trauma to your upper neck. If you get inflammation in the upper neck area, it can cause some autonomic nervous system malfunctions. I had the sweats problem about like you until I had some neck and upper shoulder to neck work done. The muscles spasms had it all messed up. I had bouts of sweats, extreme swings in blood pressure, both high and low, etc. To this day, I need to be careful about how I position my head and neck when I sleep. I need my head and neck to be straight and propped up by a pillow so my head does not roll to the side. I sleep on my back only. I suggest you be careful with your sitting and sleeping posture. A good chiropractor with massage and possibly a good Physical Therapist may help. My best to you.

Ah well that explains what ive been worried about, the random fever, the random sweats. What you describe is exactly whats happening to me.
When you say you had neck and shoulder work done, do you mean a chiropractor or some other sort of specialist? I guess because of the concussion and fall the doctors skipped over taking a look at the neck. Thank you that made me feel better. |

Neck issues are usually overlooked. Too bad, there is an old song about the head bone being connected to the neck bone. I guess the doctors never learned that song.
I was treated by a chiro but he was not able to totally resolve my problems. I then was treated by a PT who did myofacial release. She made the spasming muscles an offer they could not refuse. It took some time to get healing but the instant improvement was noticeable even though it faded. The chiro with massage also helped. My best to you.

Hey just wanted to drop in and say im doing better. Im about 80% back, all my cognition is back, the paranoia has stopped, most of the symptoms have cleared up.
It was weird, I was playing video games with a friend, had this short stabbing pain in my head, then the symptoms just....lifted. Had a few relapses, mostly due to my smoking pot and getting anxiety related to that. I wouldnt suggest smoking pot except in very very very small doses (its supposed to be helpful, but only right after the injury...I thought i had waited long enough after the injury to try, but with bad results) and I wouldnt suggest anything illegal to anyone, but for people where its legal, a little dab will do yah, and can be helpful. I still get headaches, seems to be related to the neck injury, and high blood pressure, highest was 137/83, nothing to get TOO worried about, my health and diet were horrible before the accident. I also have had some symptoms flare up due to the fact that I quit smoking ciggarettes, drinking caffiene, eating fast food, drinking alcohol, and consuming salt all on the same day about 20 days ago. Thats quite a shock to anyones body, and my descision to "get healthy" I guess was at an in-opportune time... But altogether im leaps and bounds past were I was...im sure alot of people dont come in here and give updates saying theyre better...they just sorta disapear. But keep yer heads up everyone...it will get better. |

Judging by his first post, it looks like just under two months. I would caution you though aireyden. I hung off of hoping that I would recover quickly and looking at other peoples recovery time to gauge, which constantly let me down.

It doesn't matter how long it took. Everybody's mileage will differ.
The brain has 100 billion neurons and possibly 10,000 times as many axons. The variation is injury and recover is infinitesimal. My last injury was extremely minor but my long term symptoms are not minor at all.
