Default Turmeric as a supplement for PCS

I was told by my acupuncturist that he believed Turmeric was one of the most powerful supplements one can take for better health. I did a lot of research and found numerous articles and studies about it. Its effects are in so many areas, including properties for anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, natural pain killer, shown to help kill cancerous cells (especially in bowel cancer), aids in metabolism and fat reduction, helps in depression, slows alzheimers progression, helps mental functioning, natural liver detoxifier, helps ease osteoarthritis, and many more. I started taking turmeric a few months ago and really feel a huge difference in my body...less joint discomfort after strenuous workouts, havent gotten sick, hair is shinier and fuller, my skin looks healthier, and i just feel healthier.

This link is for an article about its possible help in concussions.

Cumin has similar nutritional value. Tumeric has curcumin in it as the active nutritional ingredient. One is from a seed, the other from a dried and ground root.

We discussed cumin long ago. I don't remember if anybody tried it for any length of time.

I'm about to reach my one year mark next month and am ready to start trying new things. Nightnurse, how much turmeric do you take daily? Can you find it easily at a Whole Foods or vitamin store?

I am with you approaching one year. I am starting to try new things as well. Not sure anything will work but it's worth a try. I am not optimistic about vitamins or nutritional supplements having any noticeable effect. I take vitamins and fish oil and haven't noticed any perceptible difference.

Just saw another thing about Turmeric and Curcumin!! Oddly enough, I just got a pamphlet in the mail for a seminar for Health Care professionals on "Understanding Fatigue. Focus on Stress, Habits, and the Brain," given by a doctor who has extensive studying on fatigue in brain injuries. I obviously get a lot of things like this in the mail since i am a nurse.

Its course objective is on these 6 categories....Stress-related fatigue: the mind-body connection. Hormone-Related Fatigue. Diet, Drugs, and Herbs. THe inflammation-Fatigue- Mood Connection. Sleep Disorders. and Habits to Increase Energy.

In the Inlfammtion-Fatigue-Mood Connection it lists under it a few bullet points, but one is "anti-inflammatory foods and drugs" and it lists....omega 3s, vegetables and fruit, anti-inflammatory spice (eg, garlic, turmeric, curcumin), green tea.....etc

Isnt that interesting how its written right in the course description. Looks like an amazing seminar....and although i am doing really well and no longer suffering from PCS symptoms, I'm thinking of attending so I can learn more and be able to help other patients I come across.

Just searched for this exact type of info and up came this thread in google :-)

I had a visit with a well known naturopathic doctor in my area. Basically to go over my supplements many of which were recommended on this forum. She had me increase dosages for some based on some blood tests results and added new one's. She is recommending what I have seen Mark suggest about getting me in the upper ranges for some of them to provide the energy/nutrients required for the brain.

She then brought up Tumeric, she has me on curcumin by AOR @ 400 mg. She was a pretty strong advocate of all the benefits it provided and urged that I add it to my routine.

So I am going to give it a go.

Default Turmeric coincides with marked recovery

First, thanks to all who posted here. Wanted to share my brief experience with turmeric, since it happens to coincide with my fog lifting. I can't attribute it solely, because two other factors are plausible contributors.

After reading this post, I ordered Curcurmin with black pepper extract from iHerb.com (Doctor's Best, Curcumin C3 Complex). On 8/28/14, I started taking 500mg, two or three times a day (three if I remembered). At the time, I also started seeing a massotherapist and I started juicing (beets, carrots, celery, apple, parsley, ginger). I also started strictly avoiding all nightshades, having been reminded that some people are sensitive to them, and knowing/rembering that I was one of these people.

On 9/3/14, my physical therapist noted that my physical symptoms were improved 80% in his estimation*. Over the next week, my mental clarity had solidified. As of today, in the space of two weeks and a couple days, I went from being able to read for 5 minutes without a break to being able to read for 45, from being able to have a face to face conversation for 15 minutes to talking for hour, and from being able to barely plan my day and get one extra "task" (like going through mail, doing speach therapy homework, or making a trip to the grocery store) to being able to plan much more easily and actually being able to multitask(!!). I can get across town to a familiar location without voice guidance, while listening to an audiobook! I know what day it is without looking at a calendar or having to think too hard. I'm not 100%, for sure (uh, what did you say you were doing or needed me to do later today?), but I can actually legitimately start thinking about going back to work, with some possible accomodations.

*Note that I disagreed with his assessment, since I was still having problems with insomnia, my vision, and pain, but I did concede that I was feeling a marked improvement in mental clarity (and further pointed out that just because I was now a less rewarding patient to treat, that it didn't mean that I no longer needed his aid, and that I was afraid of regressing if therapy was discontinuted). Being able to understand how psychological factors might influence his perspective, and to advocate for my continued treatment was actually a sign that I was regaining my analytical abilities, even if I have yet to sort through my heightened emotions.

Safety, happiness, health, and ease to you all.

Alyssa
-------------------------------
A week and half after moving into a new house with my fiance/partner of 8 years and his teenage daugter, after living on my own for 9 years, I was hit by a car while riding my bike. I suffered an mTBI with PCS from multiple blows to the head, unconscious for less than a minute with no memory of event. Hit the back of my head, and above right eye. MRI and CT negative. Symptoms included constant headaches (migraine, pressure, tension), dizziness, tinnitus, visual changes, photophobia, fatigue, "spacing out", word finding and other cognitive difficulties, depression, and emotional lability.

As of 8/26/14 considered myself 50 percent improved, with pt (occipital release, manual therapy for neck, VOR, VOM) speech therapy (cognitive rehab), craniosacral therapy. Still unable to work due to congnitive difficulties, vision problems, pain, and fatigue.

On or shortly following 8/28/14, introduced new dietary modifications (Turmeric 500mg 3xday, longer time between meals, abstinence from all nightshades), increased exercise (had been walking), cognitive behavioral therapy for anxiety and depression.

Had accupunture for the first time on 9/8/14. Felt exhausted afterward with pain sharply increased. Have yet to follow up - need to find out what this means.

As of 9/13, feel 70 - 80% improved in all areas. Continuing with PT, speech therapy/conitive rehab, massotherapy, dietary modifications (including multiple supplements), exercise, juicing, cognitive behavioral therapy, meditation. Will start vision therapy soon for convergence insufficency and difficulty focusing. May continue with accupunture or may not. Confirmed today that my recent suspicions (over the past week) that my relationship has suffered direly are true. This is a horrible shock. I'm pushing for couple therapy, so hopefully that can be added on as well. I've come this far and I'm not giving up.
