I mentioned in a previous thread about numbness in my hands. It's getting progressively worse to the point I am struggling to type this.
I'm sitting with my hands on a hot water bottle in case it's the cold but it's not helping. I don't know what to do. My hands are stiff and I'm aware of every movement I make with them. I don't even know if it's worth telling a doctor. He's just going to roll his eyes at me. |

Dear Andromeda,
You may have developed the added complication of Carpul tunnel syndrome. There is an area in the wrist that gets filled with fluid and causes numbness. But that is particularly bad at night. Google it. If that does not cover your symptoms then I would suggest you have a lower neck problem. When I saw my physio for dizziness she asked if I suffered numbness or pain in my arms or hands that maybe radiated from the neck down. Take care. |

andy,
A lower neck upper thoracic problem will make a minor Carpal Tunnel Syndrome problem manifest as a major problem. C-6 to T-2 can all get inflamed. There are some stretch band exercises that can make this better. The band needs to be secured at head height. Pull across your chest at an angle so that you pull your shoulder blade toward the other shoulder blade. Do this five times with each arm every time you walk past this hanging stretch band. Also, avoid sitting with your upper back against a pillow like sitting in bed to read. This strains this same area. Hope this helps. My best to you.

Thanks, Mark. Much appreciated, couple of queries:
What is a "stretch band"? And where might I get one? I spend a lot of time in bed with my back against a pillow. I get too tired and cold to sit anywhere else. What should I be doing ideally? Sitting in a chair? |

Hello andromeda,
I'm sorry to hear that you're having the numbness in your hands. And I hope that you are in a warm flat for this cold month there! I this week have been newly again awaking to numbness in my hands (and forearms-?) Last year, my dr. asked if it were primarily my thumb and subsequent digits, or was it less-so my thumb and forefinger, and more primarily the outer digits? I was flustered for an answer, because I really cannot seem to discern a difference-? She seemed to think one-way it might involve "x" nerve; and the other way, it would indicate "y" nerve. (Perhaps these are cervical; I do not know.) At any rate, I see her again later next week, and must remember to tell her of this return of the hand/forearm numbness. I do know that I was moving/carrying too much of weighty items this week, my own likely contributor. Hope that you may get some speedy relief soon. Keep warm, Luv!

I forgot to say - I saw an osteo-someone the other day and mentioned it. He attributed it to my neck injury and said it should improve with physical therapy.
Hope you get some relief with yours soon, Theta. The flat is plenty warm enough actually, I was just grasping (!) at straws I think. |

Additionally, by the way, I also correlate a 'tremor' in my hands on the mornings that I awaken with the 'numbness' of my hands/fingers/forearms.
