Folic acid is inactive in the body. It has to be activated--methylated-- to work.

The cancer concern can be Googled... at first it revolved around young women who were given very high dose, for pregnancy... some of them developed colon cancer. But it is thought that the folate only "feeds" a cancer that is already started. Many other nutrients do this.

http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/271601.php

You are not going to find any B-complex that does not include folic acid. Folic acid is in many US foods as well. Fortification does not extend to every other country however.

I have been taking Source Naturals L-Tryptophan for two years. I have never had a problem with it.

If one reads the Amazon reviews, you will find these extreme comments frequently. I think they are more about competitors than valid complaints. As mrsD says, there are likely other factors not mentioned. This commenter is not even accurate about the contamination of L-Tryptophan. The contaminated L-T came from Showa Denko K. K. in Japan, not China.

Please consider that many who take L-Tryptophan and related supplements often suffer from anxiety disorders including OCD. They can tend to tilt at windmills with their comments.

The FDA banned L-T until contamination issues were resolved.

I replaced my morning 200 mg dose of L-Tryptophan with 100 mgs of 5-HTP a few months ago with good results. There is far more 5-HTP consumed than L-T by a huge factor. I can get 5-HTP in multiple brands at many stores that do not sell even L-T. The risk with 5-HTP is Serotonin Syndrome from taking too much.

Anyhow, was about to order L-T on amazon UK to aid sleep but got slightly spooked by the review below re Source Minerals brand...
any thoughts?
As an alternative Swanson is generally a good brand is it not?
I note there is some evidence that 5-HTP can cause EMS too?
Am also looking at this too - again thoughts greatly appreciated!
many thx!

Hello!

Question about Methylcobalamin.

1. Do you think that injection is far more effective than tablet form?
2. How much cyano is equivalent to 1 mg of Methylcobalamin?

Unfortunately postage from iherb came without Methylcobalamin and they want me to order it again Just returned money for that position( . It will cost 3 times higher now with shipping costs for me(
In our country there is not Methylcobalamin in sale.

Cyano and methyl are equivalent in dose orally.

However if you have the MTHFR mutation, cyano will not become biologically active in the body. Only methylcobalamin is active of the two.
If you have the mutation and take cyano you may test "normal" and in fact be deficient. The tests do not discriminate between the two forms.

Studies have shown that 1mg of B12 orally will yield around 13mcg in the blood. This was tested in volunteers.

The injection of 1000mcg yield about 145mcg the same way.
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/arti...able/T1/#TF1-4
Injections are given once a month usually, and the B12 leaves the blood in 72 hrs. We are used to daily intake, so many people get deficiency symptoms waiting for the next shot.
The high mg absorbed from the shot may be lost in the urine and the rest of the month you have none. So daily oral is more reliable.

Not all of a dose is used or absorbed by far.

In people who come here, most have problems with injection not raising blood levels well. They do better on oral used daily however.

If you do not have the mutation, cyano will work for you.
However most people who show up here, and get the testing do have the mutation...this is why they don't heal right and have nerve damage to discuss here. It may be the same here on TBI as it is on PN.

Default regular dosages better or not?

hi there, quick one re supplement taking - i have been regulating mine generally - ie krill oil one with breakfast/one with supper, curcumin (3 caps is RDA on pack) one with each meal, D3 at night cos i heard that's it better absorbed with evening meal etc.
Is this the right thing to be doing or better to take all in morning/in one go do people think?
many thanks

Hi Aspen in stl
I see you have a thread below on the forum where Mark has already replied to you http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/sh...31#post1120931
Best to keep the discussion on that thread as this one is primarily for discussion of vitamins & supplements
