I want to know how people can say that they got over cognitive issues without cognitive therapy????Please let me know because I sure would like to apply. Instead of waiting around for Disability to approve me so it can get paid for. I would love to get some my life back and being a mother, going to school, and running my biz etc. My M.D.s will not give me anything for ADD until I get in cognitive therapy.

Cognitive therapy is not always needed to over-come cognitive struggles. In fact, cognitive therapy is not always beneficial. Plus, cognitive therapy means a variety of things. To some, it is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). For others it is similar to brain training/Lumosity. It also may be a part of Speech Therapy. It can be directed by a Speech Therapist, a social worker, a psychologist, and a few other specialties.
There is no One Size Fits All cognitive therapy. Some Cognitive Therapy is teaching the person thought disciplines. Some people experience spontaneous improvements. For others, they learn work-arounds or other skills for doing the lost functions. For many, learning to moderate stress and anxiety allows the cognitive skills to improve. So, as I said, there is not a one size fits all therapy.

My neuropsych suggested cognitive behavioural therapy. I meet with him tomorrow to discuss it. I am leary about how much energy it will take away from my other things (kids, aging parents, spouse, etc.) versu the benefit. It won't make my big deficits go away (will it?!).
Would love to hear if anyone has experience with that. Maybe i should start a post?

What happened: Legs pulled forward by a parent's hockey stick while resting at the side of the rink at a family skate....sent me straight back. I hit the back of my head (with helmet) on the ice, bounced a few times, unconscious for a few minutes. September 11, 2011. Off work since then…I work part-time at home when I can. It has been hell but slowly feeling better (when I am alone☺). Current symptoms: Vision problems (but 20/20 in each eye alone!) – convergence insufficiency – horizontal and vertical (heterophoria), problems with tracking and saccades, peripheral vision problems, eyes see different colour tints; tinnitus 24/7 both ears; hyperacusis (noise filter gone!), labyrinthian (inner ear) concussion, vestibular dysfunction (dizzy, bedspins, need to look down when walking); partial loss of sense of smell; electric shocks through head when doing too much; headaches; emotional lability; memory blanks; difficulty concentrating. I still can’t go into busy, noisy places. Fatigue. Executive functioning was affected – multi-tasking, planning, motivation. Slight aphasia. Shooting pain up neck and limited mobility at neck. Otherwise lucky! Current treatments: Vestibular therapy, Vision therapy, amantadine (100 mg a day), acupuncture and physiotherapy for neck, slow return to exercise, magnesium, resveratrol, omega 3 fish oils, vitamins D, B and multi. Optimism and perserverance. |

Right now I am doing a three step cognitive behavior therapy with my PTSD psychologist. It took me awhile to get stabilized. Now we are working on coping skills and how to act in situations and control anger. My illnesses has put a toll on my family so I need to help them understand that this was not me for past 2yrs it is a illness. No blaming on me or my family just a illness.I think it is the first step of therapies to get us ready for the impairment therapies. I think it is starting to help me in a lot of different ways.I see my T every week. I hope this is helpful and if you have any other questions for me let me know.
