I remember something similar happening to me about a month or so after i got my concussion. As you say, it was pretty scary, it always like a sudden shock or a rush of adrenaline. The first time it got so bad that i got muscle spasms all over my body and then i started hyperventilating, all for no apparent reason.

Depending on which specialist i talked to, i got diagnosed with PTSD, anxiety disorder and even a very mild form of epilepsy. I was explained that my brain was readapting after my injury and at night it was harder to switch off.

I was on a short treatment with Clonazepam and it did help but what really did the trick for me was making a very slow and gradual transition to a calm, quiet environment before going to bed and not just turning off all of the lights all of a sudden. Meditation also helped out a lot. After a month or so, i was able to go back to sleep normally.

I suggest you discuss it with a neurologist or a psychiatrist.

Default I Could Relate

I felt as if I was having a war in my mind and most of the time I had intrusive thoughts, depression, anxiety, and insomnia and it was one of the REALLY bad stages for me.Once I surrendered to medication a lot of symptoms chilled out and were more manageable to then learn work arounds.
Take Care Mia

Sorry that's happening, it's certainly no fun.

Since my concussion I wake up in the middle of the night with a feeling of terror,
it happens right before I fall asleep too, also I can be sitting at night, not particularly tired, and I fall asleep immediately but it feels like I've passed out, then wake up 10 mins later, very weird.

My Dr said she thought I had PTSD and anxiety.

Feel better soon

I had a theory that when I overtax my brain it just does not turn off. The night after my accident I could not sleep at all, it was like a bright light was turned on in my brain and I could not shut it down.

It was almost 4 o'clock in the morning when I fell asleep and then it was only for a couple of hours. Too much stimulation seems to get my brain stuck in overdrive and it take a lot of time to turn it down.

Hope it gets better, it sounds really scary.
