Hi,
My name is Karla and I've been researching TBI the past several weeks with the new information that has been surfacing about football players having multiple concussions and symptoms developing years later. I began retracing timeline on my concussions as a child and realized just a week ago that the three concussions I had were all within a year of each other, between the age of 9-10 yrs old. I've been suffering from depression, memory problems, blurry vision, and major mood swings. I'm looking forward to learning more and am interested in knowing if it's worth my time & money to see a physician. From what I've read there isn't a whole lot that can be done; however, I'd be curious to know if the protein connected with Alzheimers could possibly be noted from a petscan. Sincerely, Karla |

Here is a starting point for you.
Alzheimer Association However 'the FDA does stress that a positive Pet Scan does not indicate a patient has Alzheimer's'. [Noted here]

Medication update: Topamax 200mg twice daily it seems to minimize daily headaches to a 1-2/10 quality(I still know they are there); and acute headaches erupt without warnings. |

Hi Karla and welcome.
You didn't mention how old you are now and how long the symptoms have been presenting. A couple of options might be to see a MD that specializes in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (physiatrist) with experience in PCS. Another route would be to see a clinical neuropsychologist for a neuropsychological assessment. My injury was different than your consecutive concussion injury, but I found speech and occupational therapy helpful in relieving the memory and mood problems. Best to you.

What Happened: On November 29, 2010, I was walking across the street and was hit by a light rail commuter train. Result was a severe traumatic brain injury and multiple fractures (skull, pelvis, ribs). Total hospital stay was two months, one in ICU followed by an additional month in neuro-rehab. Upon hospital discharge, neurological testing revealed deficits in short term memory, executive functioning, and spatial recognition. Today: Neuropsychological examination five months post-accident indicated a return to normal cognitive functioning, and I returned to work approximately 6 months after the accident. I am grateful to be alive and am looking forward to enjoying the rest of my life. |
