Hi, have not posted in some tome. Many events in the last year, for a brief refresher... I am a forty eight year old male that has suffered approx 10-12 concussions starting in my early teens through last year. Have suffered depression starting in my teens. In 2006 I suffered a severe concussion and was out fore several minutes. Since then I have experienced a good amount of cognitive decline, memory loss, suicidal thoughts, severe chronic depression, frequent headaches, poor sleep , sensitivity to light and noise etc. I have lost several jobs since hen including this past summer. Last summer I went down on my motorcycle and got another concussion and fractured my collar bone.
My marriage is struggling as my wife is having problems dealing with all this We have five children still at home. I prefer to isolate myself in my barn, and to sit outside myself by the fire.I am on Emsam, gabapentin. nothing has really helped including counseling. My depression is at most times around 7-8 0n a scale of 10. Hypersexuality, lack of apathy for anyone, agitation.... don't know where to turn.... |

Sorry to hear of your continued struggles. It doesn’t sound as if the Emsam is really doing the trick for you.
I'd revisit your current recovery program from end to end. If you haven’t had a recent assessment from a clinical neuropsychologist I’d suggest that as a starting point, or a psychiatrist that has experience with PCS patients. They may want to try a different anti-depressant. While quiet rest is important, and five kids plus the spouse may make this a challenge, I’m left wondering if the isolating is contributing to the depression. I’d look at the balance between your alone time and time with the family. This is an area where a psychiatrist or clinical psychologist may be of help. I’d also suggest mindfulness meditation in your alone time; rumination about things that aren’t positive may be contributing to your depression. In what part of Indiana do you live? The clinical neuropsychologist who worked with me after my TBI is now in the Indianapolis area. If you are close to there and would like her name send me a PM and I’ll send her contact information. Best to you as you recover.

What Happened: On November 29, 2010, I was walking across the street and was hit by a light rail commuter train. Result was a severe traumatic brain injury and multiple fractures (skull, pelvis, ribs). Total hospital stay was two months, one in ICU followed by an additional month in neuro-rehab. Upon hospital discharge, neurological testing revealed deficits in short term memory, executive functioning, and spatial recognition. Today: Neuropsychological examination five months post-accident indicated a return to normal cognitive functioning, and I returned to work approximately 6 months after the accident. I am grateful to be alive and am looking forward to enjoying the rest of my life. Last edited by Lightrail11; 09-16-2013 at 11:05 AM. |

Absolutely cant stand any noise levels or more than one person talking at a time. Makes my brain feel like it is going to explode. Recently had a hearing test. Mild hearing loss in left ear, some in right. hey also tested my noise toleration level and it is just above normal volume levels. I am drawn to isolate, dont know why. Dont like to talk in person or on the phone at all. I live about 90 miles from Indy so a name would be great. The clinic in Fort Wayne has no knowledge of repeated head trauma. |
