Hyperacusis and auditory processing problems! I am slowly getting better at this....have been to a restaurant a few times...not comfortable but I was there! I am working on challenging my hearing system bit by bit. There are a few apps that are useful. I try and put a calm news radio on when playing online scrabble in order to slowly help my brain rebuild the necessary connections. That problem makes it a more lonely inju.l.because the utside social world is noisy!!!!
You will improve.!

What happened: Legs pulled forward by a parent's hockey stick while resting at the side of the rink at a family skate....sent me straight back. I hit the back of my head (with helmet) on the ice, bounced a few times, unconscious for a few minutes. September 11, 2011. Off work since then…I work part-time at home when I can. It has been hell but slowly feeling better (when I am alone☺). Current symptoms: Vision problems (but 20/20 in each eye alone!) – convergence insufficiency – horizontal and vertical (heterophoria), problems with tracking and saccades, peripheral vision problems, eyes see different colour tints; tinnitus 24/7 both ears; hyperacusis (noise filter gone!), labyrinthian (inner ear) concussion, vestibular dysfunction (dizzy, bedspins, need to look down when walking); partial loss of sense of smell; electric shocks through head when doing too much; headaches; emotional lability; memory blanks; difficulty concentrating. I still can’t go into busy, noisy places. Fatigue. Executive functioning was affected – multi-tasking, planning, motivation. Slight aphasia. Shooting pain up neck and limited mobility at neck. Otherwise lucky! Current treatments: Vestibular therapy, Vision therapy, amantadine (100 mg a day), acupuncture and physiotherapy for neck, slow return to exercise, magnesium, resveratrol, omega 3 fish oils, vitamins D, B and multi. Optimism and perserverance. |

Mine was really bad for quite some time (at least a year). I finally started gradually exposing myself to uncomfortable sounds...and I emphasize "GRADUALLY." It is helping and I am starting to tolerate noise better. When I do expose myself to noise, it's only for small amounts of time, and it's not really loud noise; that would be too much.
I've also heard from other people who said that they had this symptom for up to five years before it started to go away on its own. Hang in there.

Hi yes I suffer with this also.
In restaurants I wear ear plugs so I can still have a conversation but they help to block out the back ground noise. Still can't go into TGIFridays though, so noisy there. I also find stores that play music in the back ground are still to Loud for me , so I avoid them or take my ear plugs. Some days are better than others though. I'm sure things will improve for you. As I have noticed a slight improvement over time. Good luck x Ninelives |
