There is a concept in business and many other arenas. One does not need to recognize the bad to be able to recognize and appreciate the good. They study the good. The simplest example is the Secret Service agents who work with counterfeit currency do not study the counterfeit examples. The study the legit examples. They know what the good stuff looks and feels like so the bad stuff is obvious.
We don't need to experience sorrow to recognize joy. For those of us who struggle with a flat affect, we may struggle to experience joy but often the last thing we need is to experience deep sorrow. We often live on the edge of sorrow most of the time.

I see my post raised quite a ruckus. I'll share what it meant to me--in hopes you see the good intent not think it/i was saying we gotta suffer to be good people
What it meant to me is that i have never NEEDED kindness from my friends, family, healthcare providers and strangers quite so much as i've needed it since my accident. When life was good, unexpected kindness was te icing on the cake. When dwelling in despair, gestures of love and kindness have been oxygen to me.

Those remaining are fatigue, brain freezes/overstimulation, headaches, sensitivity to light and sound. Insomnia is getting better but still an issue, and appetite is ba-ack! Depression and anxiety are largely under control thanks to Lexapro, exercise, and a very distant light at the end of the tunnel. Drugs: Lexapro, occasional 2-5mgs ambien. Off amatryptaline. Taking about 453 supplements. Just started vision therapy, waiting on some blue-tinted prism glasses. "You will encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated. To me, just seeing the "You must wake up with sorrow" thread heading is stressful. I try to avoid such things. My daily life has enough struggles without having to be reminded. I should not even be commenting as it brings this thread to the top again.
Many of my days are lived an hour at a time.
