Hi everyone, thanks for reading my post. 30/yr old fit male here. I sustained a blow to the head almost 5 months ago. I had a mild to moderate headache for about 3 months, which gradually faded and went away.
However, about three days after my injury, my right arm began to tingle and feel "weak" or uncoordinated. I can lift as much as ever, and I can type, play the drums, etc., but my arm just does not feel right. The severity of this comes and goes--sometimes I feel 95% okay (but this is usually fleeting), sometimes my arm just feels very floppy. After a month of two my right leg began to tingle as well. Two months after my injury I began to have a burning pain in both triceps--this lasted for a couple weeks, then went away. After a while the burning returned, but only in the left arm. It has remained there, except for the couple of weeks when it disappeared. Sometimes the pain is burning deep in the tricep muscle, sometimes the pain is a shooting pain, that is concentrated in the bicep. Sometimes the right arm and leg will have this pain, too, but not usually. Sometimes, but not as much lately, I will get a mild, strange feeling headache that is accompanied by a certain "fog"--I can still do most activities, but I have a desperate, far-away feeling. I'm not dizzy, but I'm definitely not normal and it makes it hard to do most tasks without using extreme concentration. I also started to have groin and testicle pains, which the doctor said was epididymitis, but I'm including it here in case it is relevant, because it seems very odd--I've been so healthy my whlole life. I've had this for two months, and antibiotics did not help. I had a CATscan at the ER and it was normal. I had a general reflex test (follow the finger, grip my hand, etc.) and that was normal. I had a neck MRI and that was normal. The neurologist and ER doctor both seemed unimpressed, but I am freaking out because it's been going on for so long. I am worried that it's going to get worse or that it's going to spread. If you have any insight, please post it here. I am also posting this in another forum as well, because I"m not sure where to turn. Peace. tl; dr concussion 5 months ago, started having weak right arm, tingling right arm leg, muscle pain in left arm. occasional headache and foggy feeling. freaked out. |

Try to reduce your anxiety as much as possible. I know that this is easier said than done, but you may want to see a psychiatrist about your anxiety. What I am saying is that sometimes thinking about a medical issue can cause you to notice it more and the stress can actually cause a response. I am not a doctor, but from my experiences with PCS (4 months in) I have had muscle twitches, hand tremors, pulsating head and neck, with a noticeable pulse in my neck since the injury. I think that PCS can present in hundreds of ways, which makes it such a mystery. These muscle issues seem to be rare but still normal for some people affected by PCS. Remember that you have been tested by a number of medical professionals and try to have faith that they would have caught it if it was something more serious. Just my two cents, man. Take it for what you will.
I wish you well in your recovery. Best, Danny |

Thanks a lot, Danny. I am convinced that my problems are psychosomatic--I have begun seeing a therapist as well. Getting reassurance that it's mental/emotional and not physical is very important. It's really hard to stay positive when my arm feels so crazy.
If anyone reading this thinks they may be in a similar boat, and you've exhausted other options, look up Dr. John E. Sarno. He is one of the masters of psychosomatic medicine and has helped me a lot. His books The Divided Mind and The Mindbody Prescription are well worth your time. Peace. |
