Default Pain pills

pain pills got me through the first year of pcs then I switched to amitryptaline and 3rd year I got off that. My headaches returned with a vengeance a few months ago and I got on the pain pills. It's amazing how it takes the edge off and I forgot for a few hours that I have a mTBI. How do people 3years plus manage pain? I don't want to be addicted to pain pills but a life without pain is preferable.
