Hello,
I'm many months into my post concussion. I recently bought a Fish Oil supplement pills. It suggest taking 1 after every meal. My question is do fish oil supplements help people with PCS or is it just a myth. Let me know from your experience. Thanks. BobbyR |

Your mileage will vary. They do better for some than others. They help the brain with healing and inflammation. They are not a quick fix. You still need to follow a stress reducing protocol to give the brain a chance to recover.

What kind did you buy? Not all are created equal. I personally take 3 mg (750 mcg each pill) worth daily. With the brand I have thats 4 pills. Its called NOW super omega 3. I actually take it only because it seems to help my migraines and it also helps in weight loss. Been packing on the pounds with the seizure medicine im on. Kind of helps to offset it. Not to mention it has much more healthy useages.

Mark, I have wondered about fish oil, too -- my son (with PCS) used to take them, pre-concussion, but stopped because he read that they were found to increase the risk of prostate cancer.
I wonder whether, in a highly symptomatic PCS situation, it's worth taking them for a limited period of time? |

Are you sure that's not cod liver oil with it's high levels of vitamin A that *may* higher the risk of prostate cancer?

Concussion 28-02-2014 head butted a door edge. . Symptoms overcome: Nausea, head pressure, debilitating fatigue, jelly legs, raised pulse rate, night sweats, restlessness, depersonalisation, anxiety, neck ache, depression. Symptoms left: Disturbed sleep, some residual tinnitus. |

I haven't kept up on this so don't know if the study has been critiqued, but quite often things that are 'good for you' in some respects have been shown to have a down-side, especially long-term and in particular quantities. |

Regarding fish oil, I think the consensus is you can take as much as your system will tolerate. Just try to keep your Omega 3 to Omega 6 ratio within reason. Some populations consume vast amounts due to the fish in their diets.
