Default Cervical Vertigo

I saw some comments about Cervical Vertigo in other threads. I know this is a possible issue with many on NT so maybe the discussion can be developed here.

If you post you experiences and resources/links here, maybe others can benefit.

I know that for me, my upper neck was a big problem. I was treated by a Physical Therapist with gentle traction and mobilization and by a chiropractor. They helped but I had to be very disciplined to maintain good head and neck posture during resting and sleep or my symptoms would return with a vengeance.

www.NUCCA.org and AtlasOrthogonality.com and www.upcspine.com are sources of specialized chiro treatment.

Beware that some upper cervical chiros believe treating the upper cervical spine can resolve all that ails the body. Others know that it is just one part of the whole process.

Hopefully, this discussion can help people find the help and treatment they need.

My best to you all.

Also along with getting the cervical, or whole spine aligned if needed, there is a strong possibility that the neck muscles / soft tissue may be involved or strained & injured.

Hopefully the chiro will treat the muscles too - or suggest good PT, if they don't treat soft tissues.

Possible Related issues -
* Trigger points
* Muscle spasms
* Pinched nerve
* Poor upper body postures - head forward or hunched /rolled shoulders

In my experience NUCCA chiros tend to think getting the neck straightened out will heal all - I've seen 3 total, 2 in NY state and 1 in MN. The first one I saw started talking to me about the loch ness monster and mermaids existing...the second in MN was good and suggested other therapies that might be helpful, and the 3rd back in NY is also good, but is more of the ilk that getting C1 back in place will fix everything.

A lot of the focus I've seen on this board has been about the "back of the neck" muscles. I wonder if anyone has experienced tightness/pain in the front neck muscles (e.g. the scalenes), and experienced relief from headaches getting those figured out? I find my scalenes, right by the clavicle, to be exceedingly tight.

Also, random plug that will only benefit those around the twin cities in MN, but if you want a great PT, check out "FixIt PT" in Mahtomedi. Unfortunately I could only see them a couple of times before returning to NY, but they did a gentle mobilization of joints that produced really profound immediate improvement in range of motion - it was truly amazing. I guess not many PTs practice their specific method, but it really was something. I think I would've benefited from seeing them over a longer period of time.

I should also add that in my experience, seeing an Osteopath who does cranial-sacral work on my neck helped with some minor "spinning" dizziness I would have whenever I laid down with my eyes closed. It seems that not all cranial-sacral therapists have the same skill level or experience, so being sure you've found a good one with experience working with head trauma would be good. Osteopaths in particular require more training than other practitioners.

26 year-old PhD student in evolutionary biology, slipped on ice in Feb 2014 while clipping my fingernails and walking to save time (dumbest reason for PCS ever?). Initially just had headaches and didn't feel quite right, but a minor head bump 5 days later started a downward spiral of anxiety, depression, insomnia and fatigue. Had trouble concentrating on reading/looking at screens

April 2014 - did exertion test, passed, started exercising and doing more, but didn't feel much better.

May 2014 - Went on backpacking trip OK'd by doctor, trip itself went fine, but felt worse a few days after getting back, more difficulty concentrating, worse headaches.

June 2014 - Bumped head on ceiling walking slowly down stairs, no immediate symptoms, but caused worsening headahces, more difficulty concentrating and looking at screens. Have not felt as good as I did before this since this bump.

December 2014 - after feeling relatively better I went xc skiing and fell but didn't hit my head (something my psychologist who specializes in brain injuries told me he hoped would happen so I saw it was OK), felt worse

Feb 2015 - back in grad school, light teaching load and some research, nowhere close to operating at my full capacity. Still have constant headaches, difficulty reading/looking at screens, mild anxiety and depression, and just not feeling like my normal sharp self.

Trying, but struggling, to believe that I'll get back to my old self, or at least get close.
