I have been extremely depressed since my brother died recently relapsed currently dealing with the worst symptoms including horrible light sensitivity.
I'm on gabapentin 1500 mg a day and lorazepam and 3 mg a day Should I go for it? I'm extremely anxious and constantly have racing thoughts and obsessive compulsive behavior. Will it help me hurt me what are people's experiences. My main concern is that I have visual snow or pixelated vision and this all started after I started Prozac in June and it's only gotten worse but I was only on it for 10 days it could be from the gabapentin I don't know I'm just worried about it getting worse from the Lexapro. Currently looks like there are black and white specs everywhere and even when I close my eyes |

I have taken escitalopram for over a year. It has helped with my anxiety, I also have vision issues, convergence, double vision and tracking issues. Had no exacerbated symptoms from taking it. |

Neither the gabapentin nor the lorazepam have any value to help with depression. I still struggle to understand what the gabapentin is for in your case. It is not an anti-anxiety med.
Escitalopram (Lexapro) or citalopram (Celexa) have been well tolerate by many. A short term use of an atypical anti-psychotic may help. I did well with a 30 day prescription of Olanzapine (Zyprexa) while waiting for the Celexa to take effect 2 years ago after an extreme stress event. Prozac is ancient in pharmacology and the newer meds are much better. |

I was on 10mg of lexapro for about a year. Honestly, I don't know how much it helped, other than in the sense of taking some kind of action when I was at a low-point. My only adverse effects noticed were "brain zaps" (I think it was you who helped me make the connection between getting off lexapro and having these) which occurred for maybe 6-8 weeks and have disappeared.

Initially just had headaches and didn't feel quite right, but a minor head bump 5 days later started a downward spiral of anxiety, depression, insomnia and fatigue. Had trouble concentrating on reading/looking at screens April 2014 - did exertion test, passed, started exercising and doing more, but didn't feel much better. May 2014 - Went on backpacking trip OK'd by doctor, trip itself went fine, but felt worse a few days after getting back, more difficulty concentrating, worse headaches. June 2014 - Bumped head on ceiling walking slowly down stairs, no immediate symptoms, but caused worsening headahces, more difficulty concentrating and looking at screens. Have not felt as good as I did before this since this bump. December 2014 - after feeling relatively better I went xc skiing and fell but didn't hit my head (something my psychologist who specializes in brain injuries told me he hoped would happen so I saw it was OK), felt worse Feb 2015 - back in grad school, light teaching load and some research, nowhere close to operating at my full capacity. Still have constant headaches, difficulty reading/looking at screens, mild anxiety and depression, and just not feeling like my normal sharp self. Trying, but struggling, to believe that I'll get back to my old self, or at least get close. |

Hi Danny,
My daughter has been taking Lexapro for anxiety related issues for a number of months now. She was always reluctant to try a medication and had been using natural products for a long time. Apart from the initial settling period that she found a bit unpleasant, she's found it really helpful for her. [to clarify - she does not have PCS] My concern would be that you're already on other medications and I know you've been having difficulty getting off the Gabapentin, so I don't know how you'd go adding yet another med into the mix. Everyone has different experiences with medications like Lexapro. Some do well and some do not do so well. I just wanted to mention my daughter's experience as it's been quite life changing for her in a positive sense. take care there. |

Hi Danny
So sorry you have to go through this along with PCS. I was put on Celexa (almost the same as Lexapro) the second month after my injury. I was on it about 7 months and then switched to Lexapro to see if I was less tired on Lexapro (there was no change though). I believe that they helped with my anxiety and racing thoughts, but not really with the depression. My depression was a direct symptom of the concussion though, not a reaction to the situation I was in. I can tell you that I have had bad visual snow ever since my injury and the anti-depressants did not make it worse. Hope this helps. Please hang in there as best you can.
