Hi,
Don't really like talking about myself much but I am putting this up here for others to maybe find encouragement that progress can occur even after 2.5 yrs. We always hear that we are done healing after a year and I guess it isn't true, in all instances with me healing hadn't even noticeably begun after a year. Eye evaluation Wednesday after all my therapy and the prisms are no longer needed so new glasses are being made without them and both eyes are operating at the same power now so the prescription will be the same for both eyes. The other noticeable improvement is the eyes are working together while reading and though I still repeat reading words above average it is about half the rate of when I first was evaluated. They have this device that can trace the movement of your eyes and print a graph, pretty clever goggles! Fatigue continues to be a factor in vision but at least I can have a hand in alleviating some of that by taking disciplined care of myself...heck at 57 some of that could just be old age too. Bud |

Congrats, Bud. Glad to hear your making progress. I'm starting vision therapy in a few weeks and hope I can make similar improvements.

Nice to hear that you were able to get rid of the prisms. After 44 weeks of vision therapy and two increases in the prisms I still have another 20 weeks before re-evaluation. Did you ever see a neuro ophthalmologist? How big of a problem was your balance? Like you, I am almost 3 years out. I am told there can be improvement albeit at a slower rate. Coming to grips with the new reality can be challenging and yes some of it could be attributed to aging! It is Thanksgiving in Canada this weekend and I am grateful for my improvements and hoping for more! |

Almost,
I see a neuro optometrist who specializes in eye problems from head trauma...really understands our eccentricities well and that was a huge help in and of itself! In regards to balance, I never fell over but there was definitely uncertainty when on loose dirt, rocks, steps, curbs etc. One of the other things that really bothered me was wanting to move in a slow arc to the right in crowds. I noticed it most going to church. If I walked in a bit late and few people in the foyer I had no pull to the right. Walking out after the service with many people I had to work at walking a straight line. Seriously baffled me. Mark sent me some material from the neuro ophthalmologist rehab assc. Whilst reading it, low and behold there listed was that problem as well as others that were familiar. I hope you gain success and don't be discouraged by slow progress. I try to remind myself going forward is the goal, not the speed. Bud |

Your post was encouraging. I am also in vision therapy at an amazing facility. The doctors and therapists understand when I stammer, forget simple instructions and bumble around their office. Readers should seek out eye doctor's who specialize in head trauma. I've been in vision pt for almost a year. There has been some improvement in my visual field, but not much progress on convergence and multiple images. Remember that it may not be your vision that is affected by pcs. Instead, it may be the way your brain processes visual cues.
Last month marked two years out from my debilitating tbi resulting from a vehicle accident. It saddens me when I read entries by other people on this forum. I'm having trouble seeing the bright side. I lost my career last December. My days are filled with doctor appointments, therapy and sleep. I have a fantastic support group headed by my wife of 29 years. I currently am unable to drive, so she takes time from work to shuttle me around to appointments. I feel like an anchor, holding her down. I've been imaged and tested to within an inch of my life. My medicine cabinetry can rival any pharmacy.. I'm desperately waiting for some improvement. I have so much more to do. Migraines are the worst. Driving anxiety and ptsd hinder my ability to travel. I'm currently on several Triptans, seizure medication, and several antidepressants. I'm not able to articulate any real side effects and am dependant on others to judge efficacy of any treatments. It has taken me almost two hours to write this entry. I am somewha encouraged by what I read here, and hold out hope for some progress.h |

I tried vision therapy for about 5 months or so. All in all, it was worth it. Involuntary eye movements were suppressed and saccades became more accurate. Also, it helped desensitize me to certain situations.

Heartened that you stuck with it Buffalo Boy, while I always say it is the trying which matters most, you go better than that PERSEVERENCE and SEEING IT THROUGH TO COMPLETION. You rock.

BB,
I know it is easy to get down on yourself in regards to your wife, I do. We Had been married 34.5 yrs at the time of my accident. The following 2.5 years have shown how really good of a choice I made. Like you, my wife has stayed right beside me the whole way without ever a complaint. Hang in there, we'll have your back here as you know. Danny, Thanks for the props and good to see your name pop up! Bud |
