Ditto what Hains said. I just wouldn't use the fancy words. LOL
Your heightened awareness of your surroundings caused you to also be aware of the sound of your foot plants. Walking with determination while carrying a load just makes it more noticeable. The brain can tolerate these foot plants. We do them all day long, especially going down stairs or steps.
