What vitamins and supplements are good for or have worked for PCS or are generally good for the brain..

I have no clue if there are any vitamins or supplements that are good for the brain. But I haven't been told at any point there are any good for PCS or traumatic brain injury. I also have a central abnormality of the brain. And I do know that it would mimic a low vitamin12 or some other low vitamins but you would have to go to a neurologist and have a bunch of test run to have those checked. He is the one to tell you that. Mine is a balance and vestibular neuro. And when we didn't find those problems we went on. So I would start with that kind of doctor. Or even go to the forum here and ask those kind of questions. Sorry I'm no help. I'm Donna and I've always had vertigo and balance problems along with falling. Donna |

One of the most common brain vitamins is called Gotu Kola, which has the effect of increasing circulation to the brain (undamaged brain people usually take it to help their memory). It's also wise to make sure you're taking down all of the Omega 3 Fatty Acids that you can get your hands on, as these are essential to proper brain function. Some people will also try 5-HTP, which is an amino acid that the brain uses to produce seratonin, so if you're having problems with depression that might be worth a shot (depression stemming from a brain injury is difficult to treat though, just for the record). Right now I'm using a product called "neurozyme" from a company called NewChapter (you can find it on the company's website, www.newchapter.com). It's essentially a brain-targeted multivitamin, and I've heard very good things from people about its effects. I've been using it for about a week, and while I haven't noticed any really astounding difference in my day to day functioning, it does appear that my mind is much more resistant to stress now, which is nice. From what I've heard, NewChapter is one of the best supplement companies on the market, as all of the nutrients, oils, vitamins, and etc that they put into their products are super concentrated (supplements aren't government regulated, so you need to be careful to make sure that what you're buying uses a high concentration of the ingredients that you're looking for). They're also not all that expensive... pretty much mid-range in price as far as supplements go (this bottle I have cost $13 and will last me for a month). If you've got a whole foods, wild oats, vitamin cottage, or any other organic grocer near by I'm sure they'll carry all of NewChapter's stuff, or you could just order from their website. Browse around on there though, they have a lot of good products for a wide range of ailments that are really quite effective (I used a lung boosting formula of theirs a few months ago and the difference was pretty amazing). Well I have a to see a neurologist to check me out ..my incident happen a few months about 9...Im not sure if anything happen as far as a concussion but I have felt a off ..and I can still feel some of the areas on my head were I made contacted with..

I met with a psychiatrist who is an expert on working with supplements. I was seeing him about depression, but he said that my depression was actually a result of my TBI and that the best way to work with it would be to take supplements that support healthy brain function.
The daily supplements that were then recommended for this were: Beta Carotene (Vit. A): 25000 IU B6: 100 mg B12: 20-100 mcg Vit. C: 100-250 mg, 2X day Vit E: 400 mg D3: 1000 IU (make sure it is D3 and not just plain vitamin D) Selenium: 200 mcg Calcium: 250-500 mg Magnesium:take with calcium in ratio of 2 parts calcium : 1 part mag.) Chronium 200-300 mcg Copper/zinc: in ratio of 7-15 parts zinc : 1 part copper. Zinc should not exceed 30 mg, making copper 1-2 mg. fish oil: minimum 2-4 g (should include EPA and DHA, read the label) NAC: 600 mg (acetyl cistine) Green Tea Extract: 300-450mg, 2X day Co-Q10: 60-100 mg It looks like a lot, but many of these are contained in a good multi-vitamin with minerals obtained at a health food store. Read labels, and don't buy cheapy vitamins from your corner drug or chain store (inc GNC). Find a good supplier of quality supplements without additives. |
