Hello All,
I found this site while googling post concussion syndrome. Almost three weeks ago, I fell down my stairs, with help from my 11 month old, kamikaze kitty so I've been told , and suffered three broken ribs, a concussion and assorted bumps and bruises. Fortunately I don't remember anything and woke up in the hospital the next day in intensive care and remained in the hospital for 5 days. I am home and extremely sore from the broken ribs, but what is also bothering me is the symptoms from the concussion. I have a terrible headache that comes and goes, my head seems to be quite "fuzzy", for lack of a better term and I am dizzy and nauseous. I thought the pain meds for my ribs, currently Tramadal, would help the headache, but they don't seem to touch it. There are also times I didn't take the meds to see if that helped with the nausea and dizziness, but it seems unrelated. My Dr, says the pain from my broken ribs as well as the effects of the concussion can last for a number of months. I am thrilled to have found this site and hope that I will find some helpful information to help me through this. Thanks for reading and everyone have a great evening. Best Regards, Carla |

Carla...
glad you found Forum; sorry for reasons bringing you here. since your injurys are rather recent, give your body & brain time to heal-REST be gentle & kind to self; try to learn all can about TBI Hope all soon resolves... Yes it can take months to recover and many do. Others sadly have problems that persist, present challenges, incl. finding treatmts or understanding... Headaches were one of the WORST, most debilitating Sx for me for many months. Seldom did any meds help -from rescue types to prohylactics. My problems stem from injury to cervical spine & spasms. I also had problems w/ nausea & vomiting that eventually improved. Helped by RX meds (Compazine, others) Dizziness, vertigo is also a commonly reported problem. there are many who've found help & treatmts .... but it can be a frustrating processes... much excellent info shared here; others have post more specifics, experiences, and links to more detailed info. will try to post more soon... keep us updated-- hope we'll soon hear your success story |

Hi Carla,
My experience has been advocating for my son, 12 weeks from injury now. Rest, rest, rest. I know it is very difficult and painful. He had headaches too. We started out trying to distract him from his headaches with TV, movies and outings when he could manage it, but its possible we just prolonged his healing with too much stimuli. Around week 5 we went to complete "couch potato" rest. No TV, computer, video games (he's 10 years old), activities, car rides, etc. He ended up doing a lot of baking which gave him a sense of accomplishment but did not require much exertion. After 13 days he finally had a break through. We kept a headache chart which proved very helpful for recognizing patterns and sharing with the doctors. When it was time to return to school, anxiety triggered the headaches again and set us back another couple of weeks. I am so so happy to tell you that he just got clearance today from our neurosurgeon for full activities. We're still seeing a neuropsycologist who is conducting congnitive testing. Last test two weeks ago indicated his brain was still healing even though outwardly he seemed so much better. Next test is tomorrow. We've also consulted with a child psychologist to help with the anxiety. I'm just getting back to my regular work schedule this week (since 12/22!) I know it's frustrating and turns your life upside down, but hopefully by taking it easy now, you'll heal quicker and sooner. Good luck. Sandy |
