How long on average,if this works, will it take to kick in and help with the pain? It is closely related to amitriptyline. I am currently taking 10mg per day and says to increase 10 mg per week until pain is helped.Thx guys.

Scoopy, I've never been on that med, but since it is closely related to amitriptyline I'd bet it will take a couple of weeks. My doc started my dose at 25mg and I was to double that after a week. Couldn't do the 50. Too sleepy from it. So I am still at 25, but take a different daytime med. Just out of curiosity, did your doc say why nortriptyline and not amitriptyline?

Hi Chalkdusty. Ya from all the research I'v done it seems amitript is the drug of choice for what i have going on.I was all gung ho to start it. Then she told me that nortript works just as good or better with less side effects. So i did some reseacrh and many studies have concluded that there is no difference between the two in treating nerve pain. Who knows?
I'v read where people could'nt handle the tiredness from amitript and switched to nortript with same benefits as far as treating the pain. I'll give it a try and pray it may help. If not, I will try the amitript for sure. Time will tell. How are things with you? Are the meds helping? I hope you're finding relief Chalk. |

I take nortriptyline - I started is originally for neck and shoulder pain from a pinched nerve in my neck. It definitely helped with that - I could feel it. I had to get through some initial drowsiness, but I acclimated quickly to it. I am also certain that it kept my TN from punching through harshly when it began, because I was able to adjust it upwards and see relief to my TN from it, until I eventually maxxed out. I keep wondering whether it is contributing anything now, though. I just take it along with all the other meds. Good luck with it - it really does work on nerve pain. Lily |

I am taking Amitriptyline and due to the drowsy, sleepiness
that comes with it, I take it at bedtime only. That is the instructions right from the Doctor's mouth. The amount I take is 200 mg at bedtime. It does its job but without me stumbling around all day and feeling drugged and sleepy.I also take 3700 mg. of Neurontin, but it can be taken through the day, and my other meds as well. I suffer from A.D. which is the dreaded complication of an M.V.D. Pain only stops when I sleep. Bless, Patti |
