Default post MVD question

Hello, I had an MVD procedure done 3 weeks ago. I am still on all the medicine that I was on pre-op. I am getting some mild TN pain. My neurosurgeon said this was due to the nerve being more irritatated than before the surgery. I, in my heart, think the surgery hasn't work. Has anyone experience this or heard of anyone who has experienced this?
Thanks for any help you can provide.

Thank you, before I decided to have the MVD done, Ella's story was one that I read over and over! It was very nice to have a detailed account of what she went through! I am just praying that mine turns out as good as hers. All the success stories that I have read involve people coming out of surgery and being pain free. I haven't heard of any where they had pain, and then it ended up going away, but am trying to stay positive!
Thanks for the reply.

You're freaking out a little early. If the compression has worn away at the myelin sheath protecting the nerve as mine did, you need to relax and give your body the time it needs to heal. You say you read my post MVD diary. You will see that it took a full three months for the myelin to regenerate. I know exactly the despair you are feeling every time you have a little twinge. It's devastating. I can only tell you that you are jumping the gun. Chances are your MVD worked fine. Afterall the success rate is in the high 90%. If your surgeon told you he found a compression and removed it, than hang on to that thought. He cured you. I know how devastating coming out of surgery and still feeling that monster can be. It's very early in your recovery. Relax and let your body do it's thing. You'll be fine.

hi awesomecb!

I also had the MVD done and I am now 9 weeks post op. Here is the best advice I can give you: RELAX !! I am only 22 years old so I thought I should be up and doing things fast but i was totally wrong! If i could go back I would have taken it a lot easier on myself then I did. I know it can be frustrating still having pain but it does take time .. I have even heard of people who it took a year to feel any relief from surgery. Stay positive it helps with the healing process!

Thanks! It has been 5 weeks now, still having some twinges. My doctor is going to wait to even talk about taking me off of any medicine until I see him again in 3 weeks! I am trying to stay positive, but sometimes it is hard!
How are you doing post op? I hope it works for you, you are so young to be dealing with this horrible condition!

I'm doing great post op! 9 weeks now & off all medicine & pain free! I had a few scary moments throughout this 9 weeks.. the first week I experienced the worst headache I ever had which caused me to be nauseated & later found out that it was my brain swelling so I was put on a steroid to fix that .. a week later it happened again & i was put on a steroid again. I also had minor headaches up until a few weeks ago & was very nervous something might have gone wrong, but fortunately they went away! The only other scare I had was an incision string coming out of my head but in the end they ended up snipping it.. I guess that incision string shows you how long recovery really does take because my dissolvable stitches hadn't even dissolved yet!! I am now experiencing a little burning sensation on my teeth which could be a sign of atypical TN but going into the MVD we were not sure if I had typical or atypical because my symptoms were all over the place. The mvd cured the major pain I was in & I couldn't be happier .. this burning is nothing I can't handle! I know it gets hard & I even felt sort of sad during the recovery but you have to look at it like you just had a major brain surgery done & your body is trying to react to this foreign object (the teflon) in it! My doctor was very iffy about doing the surgery because of my young age saying that young people don't get TN & he didn't know if the surgery would work so being young in this case had its disadvantages against me because most people thought that it was odd for being so young. Hope your having a pain free day!
