I had a cleaning and that started the problem a little bit, my filling got loose, and that acerbated the problem, then he did a root canal and the pain and burning was so bad he pulled the front too. He said I could go to an oral surgeon for a CT scan and if he couldn't find anything I would have to go to a neurologist. My condition was just diagnosed a little over a month ago, and I have been seeing a pain management dentist. It has helped a bit but the problem comes and goes. I wouldn't even know what to say to the neuro surgeon. I doubt he could help me. I was also told the problem was always there but the dental work brought it out. Not many people are familiar with this problem on a large scale. I have had a MRI and Xrays and scans and there is no tumor nothing pushing on the nerve, so I don't know what a neuro surgeon could do. I am at the moment exploring other alternatives. |

How old was the filling that came loose? Was the gum area inflamed prior to the root canal? Is burning your main complaint and is it constant?

The filling was at the very least over ten years old and was very deep. My Newfoundland had chipped part of my tooth so it was filling and bonding. The nerve was dying as shown in the scan, which is why they wanted to do a root canal, thinking the burning would subside. The root canal made it worse, the dentist couldn't even touch my tooth, so he pulled it, thinking it was fractured. Turns out the nerve was affecting the tooth next to it. . The gum was burning but there was no inflammation according to the xrays. The burning was horrible but the tooth next to the extraction site was sore and hurt. The burning has been under control but the soreness of the tooth and in between the tooth next to it comes and goes. The burning I can not handle and I am always afraid it will come back.

Sounds like you would have been better off skipping the rc and had it extracted in the first place. You most likely just have healing pain going on at this point. It is a good sign when it goes away for awhile!

The procedures were done in November, if this is healing pain, then I am in big trouble. I had to be taken off the nortripiline yesterday, as I couldn't hold any object, tremors and shakes so bad, that the doctor took me off immediately. Now not so bad today. The burning and pain and soreness came from the tooth and gum next to the extracted site, the gum on the extracted side cleared up but the burning continued sometime across the left top side . It has been so bad I asked God to take me. Now it is calm but sometimes the tooth and gum next to the extracted sight starts to throb and I get scared. I am going to go see a woman doctor who saved my life when my organs were shutting down a few years ago, with acupuncture holistic medice and regular medicine. I have talked to her and she treats trimengial neuralgia so I will be making an appointment as soon as this snow clears up and stops. A storm last night and another on Sunday. I wish I had magick powers and with a wave of my hand could make everyone who has the disorder pain go away.

I know our pain is caused by different things, but I would be very wary about having acupuncture for Trigeminal Nerve pain. Acupuncture dilates blood vessels, and the first acupuncturist - a Physio - I saw for neck and shoulder problems caused IMMEDIATE TN attacks as though I had taken my heart GTN spray.
The second, a Nurse Practitioner with Traditional Eastern training, I saw for a worsening of the same neck injury knew which areas to avoid - head, neck - concentrating the needles in my back and arms. Just make sure your Dr knows your WHOLE history, complications, etc, before starting treatment. It is nice that you seem positive about this though, keep it up. Dave. |
