Wink B vitamins questions....

Hello.
The only vitamins I have in my house are a multivitamin that on occasion I take. I like to think I get alot of mmy vitamins from the foods I eat. However, I have read here about the B vitamins and how important they are in healing nerves among other things.
I bought a B complex bottle of vitamins to take. I look at my fingernails and they are very ridged, don't know what my levels are. Would it hurt to take a b complex? I don't know if it can mix with the meds I take...

Lightbulb The basic nutrients you need to heal nerves

are:

B12 (I recommend methylcobalamin)
B6 (I recommend P5P version)
folic acid
There is an RX with all 3 activated B's in it called Metanx.
That would be your best bet.

The amounts in a mulitvitamin are very low. A B-50 would be needed at least, but would still be low in B12.

The other two things are
magnesium (not oxide form)
Omega-3 fatty acids

All five of these work to help repair the myelin that coats the nerves. They also need methyl groups which commonly come from the diet from root veggies like beets. There are supplements for this and they are called dimethylglycine or TMG trimethylglycine.

Nerves get damaged by:
nutritional deficiencies
trauma
infection, including herpes zoster and simplex
medical interventions
genetics (CMT)
metabolic derangements ~~ diabetes and hypothyroidism

I am still unclear exactly where your problem comes from.
Where the cyst was, and whether it was operated upon.

Also since you mention IBS... and since your meds reflect a Fibro treatment protocol, if you do have Fibromyalgia, you need to know that the spinal fluid of these patients typically comes up low in B12.
So you should try at least for now 1 to 5 mg a day of methylcobalamin. This is the activated most useful form of B12.
examples:
http://www.iherb.com/ProductDetails....1&pid=129&at=0

http://www.iherb.com/ProductDetails....1&pid=117&at=0
Take once a day on an empty stomach.

Many people respond right away to this, within a month.

I have threads here on magnesium, EFAs (omega-3s) and B6.
I'll bump them up for you.

Thank you. The cyst that I had I beleive may have been the catylist for my problems. It was on the right ovary and ruptured... but then disolved, so there was no surgery. After that, I had severe pain in the pelvis.. went to my GI doctor and found that I was having colon spasms. I have had GI problems for 20 years. That has been resolved as well.
All this time ( 3 months) I have had a burning in the vaginal area... this was the main problem. When all of the other thngs went away, this was still there. It is chronic constant burning pain. I went to a neurologist, and he determined nerve pain, it looks to be Pudendal Neuralgia... not Fibro. The symptoms are you can't sit any length of time, burning in vag area, chronic constipation, pain gets worse as the day goes on. The pudendal nerve is either irritated or entrapped, and I am working on finding out the problem.
This came about and it is yet to be determined if it was the chronic constipation causing irritation on the nerve, or the muscle spasms... it just came about for me. I have heard about the B vitamins and how they can heal the nerves. I will look into your suggestions, I am all for what helps to heal . I just wasn't sure you could take them with the Neurontin I am taking.

thanks

Default straining...

can put pressure on nerves down there. If you have chronic
constipation, well, that is not good for you.

Magnesium will help that as well.

I also found this site, whose author specializes in neuropathy of the pelvic area:

Thank you again. Yes, straining is not good, and I basically have been continuin g to drink more water, take stool softeners, and eat more fiber to help with this. I don't know if this was the cause of my PN.
Thank you for the website it was informative, and I am considering the Guided Nerve Block as treatment down the line.
So you think that the B vitamins and the magnesium would be a good start for supplementation in healing the nerves?

Lightbulb most definitely...

This is not MY list....it was published by a biochemist who
did research into methylation chemistry.

Craig Cooney PhD.
http://www.amazon.com/Methyl-Magic-M...4329065&sr=8-3

The nervous system requires certain nutrients including Omega-3 fatty acids to maintain the myelin coat on nerves.
Magnesium is needed to metabolize the fats properly and the B's to place them there.
