Lightbulb Low Vit D status, may impact Serotonin:

http://psychcentral.com/news/2014/02...ism/66469.html

This is very interesting, and may be one reason pain scores improve when Vit D is normalized.

Default Vitamin D question

Hi all, I have a weird question about Vitamin D. I had subtotal thyroidectomy in January (they didn't leave much, the entire thyroid was enlarged and very large masses on both sides) Since then, they've wanted me on calcium with vit. D supplements. The thing is, every time I start taking it, I begin having severe muscle cramps. It starts in the calves then moves to all the larger muscles, including those in my upper arms. Sometimes it's so bad, the muscles in my feet start cramping, causing my toes to curl. It occurred to me this started after I started the supplement, so I discontinued. The cramps stopped after a couple of days, so I started the supplements again, and the same thing happened. I've checked online and also checked with my family doctor (my VA endocrinologist is very difficult to get in contact with) and my home doctor said he never heard of anything like this. I've even looked online and can't find any precedent for this. Do you guys have any ideas? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Dawn

Lightbulb

My doctor had her thyroid removed at a teaching hospital.(cancer)
The resident removed her parathyroid glands by mistake. So now she has terrible cramping all over.

I'd get tested for disorders of the parathyroids.

You also may be low in magnesium. Magnesium is the mineral that relaxes, and calcium is the one that contracts muscle.

If you are low in magnesium you will have cramping often.

There is a poster here at our PN forum--glenntaj-- whose wife had her thyroid removed and had terrible cramping for a while.
It is called calcium "shock" and should resolve if your parathyroids are intact and not damaged.

You can search "parathyroid" using the search function and find those posts, and/or come to our PN forum and ask him, in a new post.

http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/forum20.html

Disorders of the parathyroids are complex, so you may need a good endocrinologist.

I take 4000 IU daily and I believe my last test results were 80.

Knock on wood and crossing myself, I suspect this level of Vitamin D has helped reduce my body aches that come with having lupus and Sjogrens Syndrome.

I do, however, have other conditions, that are still causing bad pain.

Also, I would like to mention that I think it has contributed to an overall feeling of well being, which is amazing considering my health concerns and other issues on my plate.

I do take other supplements including calcium, magnesium, fish oil, b complex, methyl B, a multi and more.

Wink a new Vit D conversation here:

http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/thread229756.html

Brings up new information about Vitamin K2.

Here is the Linus Pauling Institute article on Vit K for more details.
