AWWWWWW, I need that frog, thanks. Yeah, maybe you're right Billie...maybe I ought to just accept who I am and go on. I do have some nice clothes in a size 3. Trouble is...if I get a handicap scooter the weight limit is always 250 and I am nearly 230 already. UGH...it will cost even more money to buy one that will carry me. Hee hee! froggie

Default Compulsive Overeater

Hi, Gaye! I can totally relate to your story! I've been a Compulsive Overeater since I was 13 (that's 41 years). I tried every diet known to womankind to no avail. I even had my jaws wired shut once! I would throw food away to keep from eating it only to find myself digging through the trash late at night looking for those chips I threw away! My weight continued to climb to its highest point of 235 lbs. I was full of shame because I felt I had no will-power, no discipline. Then, about 18 months ago, my doc put me on Topamax for the p. neuro. pain and I found for the first time in my life I didn't want to eat compulsively! It was like a miracle. I actually would stop eating BEFORE my plate was clean! I only ate when I was hungry! I had NEVER experienced that before. I felt like a normal human being instead of a shameful pig. I lost 70 lbs over a six month period. Unfortunately, I began to have side-effects from the Topamax (feet and ankles swelling...joint pain) that were severe enough to make me stop taking it. I gained 20 lbs back. Recently, my doc put me on Cymbalta and I'm having the same wonderful side-effect...the compulsive eating has stopped...and I've already lost 10 lbs.
I know that not everyone has this particular side-effect from these meds. Some people actually gain weight on them. But it might be worth a try. I can't tell you the relief it brought me to be able to eat like a normal person and not be enslaved by food. It's a wonderful feeling in itself...and the weight loss really helps me feel better physically and emotionally.

In addition to losing the weight, I was able to stop taking blood pressure meds, irritable bowel meds, and acid reflux meds because these problems went away with the weight loss. So, it really is worth considering

I'm having similar success started Lexapro and my mood is awesome. It took about 6 weeks to get the sleepy/nausea s/e under control. Then I stopped Lyrica and that was what caused me to eat continually. I blamed the steroids, which I'm sure didn't help. But after reading here in one of the forums about the weight gain w/Lyrica, I quit and am so happy. My pain is no better or worse without it. I'm still at 190, but down 8lb in 6weeks.

Much luck, hope you find something to help, froglady.

Thumbs up

Dear Adams Grammy,
Thank you for sharing your wonderful story here.
Glad that you have found something to help with your weight loss.
It is interesting and curious how meds can cause different side effects for some and not for others.
Good luck in your journey!
and welcome!

Hi AdamsGrammy, whoops so sorry, spelled your name wrong yesterday.
I have dug food out of the garbage can ..if wrapped..LOL and only last week dug out some Hersheys Kisses and ate the whole thing! I wish I could be on topamax, I have heard it is good for weight loss but Lyrica is what I am for right now. I wonder if it is causing me even more problems with binge eating or maybe just eating constantly. Since I am such a overeater it is hard to tell. Right now I am eating chicken noodle soup and I add rice to it. I am glad you have been able to lose the weight and sorry some came back. I was down to 200lbs around May of this year and I am already back to 218 probably...maybe more, I need to weigh myself.
I can lose if I go on the South Beach Plan but just can not get myself back to that pont or even stay on it if I do start it. Right now I am having some problems with my memory again and wonder if it has something to do with post concussion syndrome I had from a wreck back in March? Seems like I take one step and fall back two. Oh well, tomorrow issssss another day!
Glad you came on board WELCOME, Gaye (also known as froggie)

MSacorn, I think lyrica may not be so good for my weight either. I can't seem to get enough to eat but it could be just my usual compulsive eating? I am glad you could get off it, I am not sure about myself, I feel so much better on it than I did. I would hate to have to stop taking it unless something like Topamax would work for my pain. froggie
