Our daughter in Bloomington said the streets were totally flooded and they had torrential rains on Wed. It just keeps going south of us....but right this min. the sky here looks ominous. (((Billie)))

Yes Alffe, I have drove in water so deep today, in the road, that I didn't know if I could make it threw. There is so much water, it is like an ocean, you can't see land at all. It is scarey when it is like that. I know better, but it was so far to turn around and go back. In 2 days we have gotten 4 1/2 inches if rain. Even the tree trunks are all green with mold. It is terrible here. The farmers can't get the crops in the ground and it is late for that.

Billie I know what you mean about going back once we've started out.....it is dangerous to try it.
Cooper (my dog) and I ended up in the basement
this afternoon as we had tornado warnings and the sirens went off. It poured for about 5 mins and now the sun is out.....go figure!

When I used to cook white rice it came out perfect so I am wondering if this is just how brown rice is or should I adjust? I added some chicken bouillon to it and a little garlic while it was cooking and it tasted so good...just a little crunchy LOL ...Sue
I found this -
[GENERAL DIRECTIONS FOR PREPARING BROWN RICE

Ingredients

* 1 cup uncooked brown rice
* 2-1/4 cups liquid (water, broth, juice)
* 1 tablespoon butter or margarine (OPTIONAL)
* 1 teaspoon salt (OPTIONAL)

NOTE: 1 CUP UNCOOKED BROWN RICE YIELDS ABOUT 3 TO 4 CUPS COOKED RICE

Directions: Top of Range, Microwave Oven, Rice Cooker

Top of Range

1. Combine 1 cup rice, 2-1/4 cups liquid, 1 teaspoon salt (optional), and 1 tablespoon butter or margarine (optional) in 2- to 3-quart saucepan.

2. Heat to boiling; stir once or twice.

3. Reduce heat; cover and simmer. Cook for 45 to 50 minutes. If rice is not quite tender or liquid is not absorbed, replace lid and cook 2 to 4 minutes longer. Fluff with fork.

Microwave Oven

1. Combine 1 cup rice, 2-1/4 cups liquid, 1 teaspoon salt (optional), and 1 tablespoon butter or margarine (optional) in 2- to 3-quart deep microwave baking dish.

2. Cover and cook on HIGH 5 minutes or until boiling.

3. Reduce setting to MEDIUM (50% power) and cook 30 minutes. Fluff with fork.

Rice Cooker

The USA Rice Federation recommends following individual manufacturers' directions when using a rice cooker. In general, they advise that "all ingredients are combined using 1/4 to 1/2 cup less liquid than for the top-of-the-range method."

Thanks Jo, I don't think I will do the less water (with rice cooker) though because to me that would make it worse as far as toughness goes. I will let you guys know with my next batch. ...Sue

Hi I can't really write anything encouraging. It rained all night heavy. We got 7 1/2 inches. The next town over got 9 inches of rain. Nobody can get in or out of town, so I closed our store earily. Not enough business to keep the lights on. I may go take some pictures of this after I eat. Need I say more. No one in town can remember it being this bad before.

Have a good day!

Hey Snoozie,

I dont have a rice maker but I do know that Trader JOes has the most amazing microwaveable brown rice. 3 minutes and its steamed perfectly. A nutritionist told me about it.

Stay safe in that rain guys. We are off to go mattress shopping today.
