I've tried something similar. I had a "stress ball" at work that I brought home when I cleaned out my desk. I use it sometimes but it seems to make my hand weaker. After I work out with the stress ball I can barely hold anything in that hand for a good while. It actually feels like when you've held onto a weed eater for a long time and your hand and arm is literally useless for a little while after.
