Hi,
This is fine to talk about and I am all right.
I don't want to talk about anything upsetting to you.
I'm going to work now.
Good luck with therapy.

Waves! UGH! I am a vegetarian and I couldn't imagine eating any meat. But HORSE meat? eeewwwwww! I mean I know that gelatine is made from horses, cows & pigs hooves which is bad enough.

I gag every time I have to take certain pills Cymbalta & Neurontin. And I'm searching for pills which do not have the geltine caps. I mean the industry makes Vege Caps, but they are quite expensive and so pharmacy companies won't use them. (I think I feel a crusade coming on).

You can be assured though dear Waves, that if a horse made it to the pot, it was not a healthy, muscular specimen galloping through a field. It would have been a poor broken down old nag who could hardly stand, with its ribs poking through its flesh. Which to me is worse. Because they should be allowed to die naturally unless in pain, in which case the Vet should euthanase them.

I'm 100% with you and the others Waves...the thought makes me sick too. Takes me back to when I was 5 or so and had 2 rabbits. We were very poor at the time because my dad was so sick and couldn't work. One day I came home from school and Dad told me my Rabbits had escaped and ran across the field (lived in a farming village).

He told me they were happy and free...that night we had the strangest tasting chicken I'd ever had. Still didn't hit me 'til I was in my 30's that my Rabbits were more a part of me than ever before...Felt funny to throw up 27 years later...But I knew that if Dad killed them it was so we could eat. So I forgave him. It must have hurt him too. I knew my Dad well...

So you're not alone Waves dear one, we are all right there with you

((((hugs))))
Rhiannon

Heart ((( Rhiannon )))

I'm so sorry about your dear bunnies!!!

Also i didn't know that about gelatine.... hmmm... i have been dying for some raspberry jello ever since i moved away... can't get it here. hooves? now you got me reconsidering. i guess i never thought about it too much... i think i assumed it was artificially made.

what about hair gel products? do you know?

Anyway i do appreciate your note of support. I offhandedly asked my pdoc if he had ever had horsemeat and he said yes. (argh!) so i offhandedly asked if he liked it (yes, self-torture here) and he said yes (ARGH! if you might not like the answer, don't ask!) ... although he wasn't nuts about it and he said

*** something reassuring at last ***

that it isn't very widely eaten here. that was a relief.

it was end of session chit-chat as i was gathering my things... i didn't tell him why i asked. and i probably won't. we have plenty other stuff we need to get into, anyway!

Dear RhiannonsMoon,
It's frustrating to try to eat a certain diet and then have to find ways around major companies.

Dear Waves,
Here are some foods in the US. I don't know about other places.
Skittles, Gummy Bears, and other candy; marshmellows; some yogurt, ice creams, cream cheese; sometimes icing or frosting; some frozen veggies, . . .

Kellogg's Frosted Wheat cereal according to the Guardian in the UK:

Arrow Jell-O and gelatin sources/products/uses

i went searching based on what Mari and Rhiannon posted about gelatin.

oh one thing, now i can't find the source any more, but i saw one entry/article that said that due to the extensive processing required to make gelatin, it does not require labeling as an animal product. processed animal == not animal??? hello?

but i found this cool site:
International Vegetarian Union site (www.ivu.org)

they had a FAQ page on gelatine:
http://www.ivu.org/faq/gelatine.html

Quote:
Is there vegan gelatine?

from another US reader:
Hain makes a Jello product with non-animal gelling substance (no meat, bone, skin, hoof, or any other part/derivative) that is superior to Jello. Also, some 'snack pack' gel snacks are NOT made with gelatin, and available in larger grocery stores (even in texas!), just read the label.

OTHER GENERAL INFO

Wikipedia entry: Gelatin

Quote:
Production
On a commercial scale, gelatin is made from by-products of the meat and leather industry. Recently, fish by-products have also been considered because they eliminate some of the religious obstacles surrounding gelatin consumption [3]. Gelatin is derived mainly from pork skins, pork and cattle bones, or split cattle hides; contrary to popular belief, horns and hooves are not used.[4]

Uses
Common examples of foods that contain gelatin are gelatin desserts, trifles, aspic, marshmallows, and confectioneries such as Peeps, gummy bears and jelly babies. Gelatin may be used as a stabilizer, thickener, or texturizer in foods such as jams, yoghurt, cream cheese, and margarine; it is used, as well, in fat-reduced foods to simulate the mouthfeel of fat and to create volume without adding calories.

Gelatin is used for the clarification of juices, such as apple juice, and of vinegar. Isinglass, from the swim bladders of fish, is still used as a fining agent for wine and beer.[7]

What exactly is Jell-O made from?

The gelatin you eat in Jell-O comes from the collagen in cow or pig bones, hooves, and connective tissues[contradicts Wiki entry]. To make gelatin, manufacturers grind up these various parts and pre-treat them with either a strong acid or a strong base to break down cellular structures and release proteins like collagen. After pre-treatment, the resulting mixture is boiled. During this process, the large collagen protein ends up being partially broken down, and the resulting product is called gelatin. The gelatin is easily extracted because it forms a layer on the surface of the boiling mixture.

Where can you find gelatin?

Gelatin is a common ingredient in foods because it is so versatile. It can be used as a gelling agent (as in Jell-O), as a thickener, an emulsifier, and a stabilizer. You'll find it in a variety of foods, from yogurt to chewing gum. Here is a list of some other foods that commonly contain gelatin:

* gummy bears
* sour cream
* cream cheese
* cake icing and frosting
* marshmallows
* soups, sauces and gravies
* canned ham and chicken
* corned beef
* sausage

Gelatin is even used to make the coating for pills that makes them easier to swallow. It's also in cosmetics, lozenges, and ointments.
