Default yoga

Dear Majo,

How about yoga? It trains you in breathing and in relaxation techniques.
It is amazing. You can learn to lower your heart rate, calm yourself, and so on.

Have you ever thought about yoga?

Lightbulb Majo... Mg helpful for tics, nerves/anxiety, and insomnia

consider adding magnesium to your b supplement, for tics, anxiety, general nervousness and insomnia.

Mg deficiency/higher requirements are implicated in many nervous disorders including "startle syndrome" ... like if someone walks up behind you suddenly you jump out of your skin.. dunno if you get that... i have it at times. i also had problems with tics badly at one point... and they went away when i started drinking lots of milk (good Mg content!)... then later i read about it in a nutrition book.

now i take an Mg/B complex supplement that also has vits C D and E in it. (all are needed for correct utilization of the mineral.)

i haven't had tics in years.

Thanks for the info on Mg. I have startle syndrome and panic attacks because of my brain injury. It really is awful. I try to eat properly and take supplements, but I often wonder if the medications we take don't hinder absorption.

Some medications absolutely DO affect absorption or change our dietary requirements... for instance i take Depakote and with that Selenium and Zinc are both needed... i take those too. Carnitine is also recommended, but your body can make that, if you get enough of the others.

The other important thing is, many times, one particular element will be mentioned - for instance, magnesium, but as mentioned in my post (and it works the same for most things - the element or vitamin must be taken along with sufficient and correctly proportioned amounts of its "complementary" nutrients for the body to be able to utilize it properly.

The B vitamins for instance should always be taken as a complex - and not one of those B-100 or B-50 ... which give 100mg (mcg in some cases) of each - that is not proportional. it is hokey marketing it goes by grams and not % daily requirement.

Mrs D knows lots about what meds affect what nutrients... but i will be happy to look into things for you also, if you would like to tell me what meds you take... you can PM me if you wish for more privacy, or start a thread for this topic so others can chip in... as you prefer.

Good to see you Hockey, and I hope you had a good Thanksgiving!

Dear Hockey and Major:

Here is MrsD's Magnesium thread.
http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/sh...ight=magnesium

Don't buy Magnesium from magnesium oxide. The body does not absorb it.
You can also get magnesium from foods like almonds.
http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/sh...nds#post221819

Also, you can soak your feet in Epsom Salts to get magnesium -- it will absorb through the skin.

Some people take it to help them sleep at night.
I take Magnesium with my night meds. I'm not sure it helps for sleep but I take it anyway.

Default Biofeedback

Dear Majo,

We have good science on Biofeedback.
BIOFEEDBACK: A WORKING DEFINITION
http://www.coedu.usf.edu/zalaquett/H...iofeedback.htm

Quote:
Biofeedback is a therapeutic technique that helps clients develop the ability to control certain physiological processes. The means to do this include monitoring the physiological response in the client and displaying the signals generated by the monitoring technique to the therapist and client. The client uses this biological feedback to learn about and gain control of his/her responses. Biofeedback is, therefore, an educational process in which the client is helped to learn to control certain physiological processes, but it is the client who assumes the responsibility for and becomes an active participant in his/her own improvement.

The therapist utilizes different techniques to facilitate the acquisition of such control (none of the techniques used in the Counseling Center include surgical or pharmacological adjuncts). An additional benefit of this program is that the client increases his/her feelings of self-control and personal mastery because it is him/her who produces the desired changes by following the therapist's instructions and practicing regularly.

Also this page linked to the one above. It has good instructions.
http://www.coedu.usf.edu/zalaquett/H...ens/breath.htm
Quote:
During stressful situations we rarely stop to think about what is happening within our bodies. Indeed, the pressures of the moment keep our minds occupied on almost everything but our physiological functions. Consequently those functions often become irregular, leaving us in an unhealthy state of being. When we are in this state we have fewer chances to succeed in whatever we try to accomplish.

Among the many physiological functions adversely affected by stress is our breathing. Even when stress is minimal few people retain a habit of natural, full breathing which is required for maintaining a good mental and physical state. Proper breathing is essential for sustaining life and cleansing inner body systems. By learning proper breathing techniques stressful situations may be handled better and overall mental and physical health will be improved.

Hi Mayo,

Eye ticks can be so embarassing. For a long time I had them in both eyes. When my one went, my husband would get annoyed because he thought I was rolling my eyes at him. (Like I would ever do that. lol) When the left eye ticked, old guys would wink back at me in the grocery store.

I don't have much trouble at the moment. However, that's only because I'm on such a massive dose of anti-spasm meds that I can barely hold my eyes open.

Cheers
