Default Weekend Check in Thread: Jan. 9, 2010 How Are You?

Hello, Folks,

I have been sleeping more or less but I feel sluggish and nap some days if I can.

This afternoon, Hubby asked me if he could help with some of my boxes in order to get the living room looking nicer.
We worked together for a couple of hours.
And we got along!

What's going on with the weather??!
It is expected to freeze tonight.
I am warm inside -- thank goodness for heaters.

Dear Beth,
We started last week.
Yes climate change seems to be in play here -- not that I really understand all the research and statistics involved.
How are your kitties?

Talking

It is cold. 44 F.
In India homes are not centrally heated, so heating is arranged as need based and I hate heaters, even those that come with steamers. So here I am on the computer wearing a ton of woollies.

I have been researching for a friend, someone who at the cost of sounding juvenile I think of as my 'best friend', who has Parkinson's. He has been diagnosed for over ten years now. Although the progression has been slow so far, it has now got to a stage where more medications need to be added. Dosage and timing is very important to allow mobility and there are just so many permutations and combinations that have to be tested out to arrive at some kind of an optimal for a certain amount of time.

The Parkinson's forum's support has been awesome. Suggestions to use a simple OT drug which is prescribed for cough has helped a great deal.

ABBIE - the aforementioned drug is also meant to help lupus, fibro and CFS. It is Dextromethorphan.
Here is a link to a google search page that lists a lot of articles on the subject.
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&c...yalgia&spell=1

Nothing much happening really - rather, I haven't had time for much else.
I have put myself on a no grain, no sugar eating program. Fruit, veggies, chicken and fish. Ate too many chocolates and sweets last month. I feel bloated.

Mari, Bizi, I agree. maybe it is the effect of global warming, but from what I gather these extreme temperatures also happened decades ago. So? Too complicated. I will continue with my efforts at living an environment friendly life. Global warming or not, can't hurt on either the micro or macro level.

Enjoy your Sunday all of you.

In my neck of the woods, this weather is normal in a year. Its been the weather we have had the last few years that hasn't been so normal.

Its cold and snowy here. And if my son had been home he would have
missed two days of school. So our schools already have 2 make up days.

Just life here, I'm afraid this is going to be a bad make up days year.

I spent friday night and part of Saturday with my mom and a couple of
sisters. Then back home. To the fact I sent Dale with Derrick to
the Girls Purdue Game today. He plays at half time.

Its not something Dale enjoys but he can handle it. And he needs to learn
to do things Derrick does.

Heart

well the climate is changing that is for sure, at least here, 17 was the low last night, I think I have lost many plants. supposed to warm up though.
my kitties are fine and warm inside cats.
WE went to an art walk (the 2nd saturdays of the month) last night. and a gathering of fringe type artists, goth in nature, my friend was displaying her paintings which were not well lit so you missed out on the subtleties but glad to support her and wished her well. The streets were mostly Deserted due to the cold temps. Walked around a bit stopped at a gallery as we were geting ready to leave that had a wine tasting set up. the wines were good, chardenay and cabernet both very smooth. they do in home wine partys, I don't think I have that many friends who like wine!
But it is a fun thing to think about.
going to watch avatar this afternoon in 3-D...supposed to be very good!
stay warm where ever you are today
(or tonight if over seas waves to waves )

have a great rest of the day!

Bizi, Mari,
Here is an article about climate change that was in the Guardian yesterday.
Interesting. I thought you may like to read it.

Hi Mari The weather is affected by the"El Nino-Southern Oscellation(2009,2010). It also took the tops of the hurricanes clouds out during the 2009 season I believe. This phenomina is hard to explain. Google it,and it will show maps of the areas that it affects in America. I don't know how to bring it here. I wish that I did. BF

Link El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) effect

Thank you Steve!

Your post was very enlightening. Although I am generally aware of the El Niño phenomenon, i did not know we were in another bout of it, nor did it even occur to me!

Ok, here are some links.

Wikipedia has an extensive page on this, with references.
Wikipedia - El Niño-Southern Oscillation

Here are just a few tidbits:
Quote:
Definition
El Niño is defined by sustained differences in Pacific-Ocean surface temperatures when compared with the average value.
...
Typically, this happens at irregular intervals of 2–7 years and lasts nine months to two years.[6]

Early stages and characteristics of El Niño
...
The Pacific Ocean is a heat reservoir that drives global wind patterns, and the resulting change in its temperature alters weather on a global scale.[8] Rainfall shifts from the western Pacific toward the Americas, while Indonesia and India become drier.[9]
Here's a page from The Franklin Institute Science Museum dating back to the 1997/8 episode of El Niño, that makes an interesting point:
El Niño: Hot Air over Hot Water

Quote:
In the 1500s, fishermen who lived in South America began to wonder about a current of unusually warm water that came to their shore every few years near Christmastime. Since the fishermen believed in the birth of the Christ child at Christmas, and since they spoke Spanish, they named the hot water El Niño, which means "the infant" in Spanish.
[...]
The 1997-1998 El Niño may or may not be stronger than ever before. Scientists are still deciding. One thing that is definitely different about this El Niño is the technology that scientists are using to study it.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) has two brief pages dedicated to El Niño and the complementary La Niña phenomena
NOAA El Niño Page
NOAA La Niña Page

well that's plenty for now i should think.
