Bizi,

That has an amazaing picutre from Nassau, Bahamas. I have to watch tv to see how the people in the Bahamas fared.

That link also has great information about the storm surge effects in Ocean City, New Jersey, Maryland, and Atlantic City. The storm could hit those areas as a slow moving Category 2.
New York could be a Cat 1. The problem with the storm in those places is that it would be slow moving and dangerous.

this is the map i use, and how i use it:

http://www.wunderground.com/wunderma...re=0&ft=0&sl=0

is the wundermap i use. i have the following checked in map options:
-- potential track area
-- forecast
-- past track observations

then on the right panel, click satellite. this shows the cloud cover and as far as i can tell that is updated live. in the 'options' section, you can click animate. the color legend is on a separate tab ('legend') next to the 'options' one which is the default displayed.

they are still faring. Irene is far from done with the Bahamas. the southern parts are the most affected (as usual). but the north is denser, and there are perhaps more technological hazards. they seem to have prepared pretty well with programmed power shut-downs. although seems unclear that the the plans were carried out or successful in NP. A reporter writing about this said he saw a powerline sparking when the rain started again and was glad to get off the scene. BEC (the Bahamas Electricity Corporation) - company responsible for power in NP, is SO NOT known for the best quality or reliability of service, and let alone equipment.

here is the link to the local newspaper online, if you're interested. i posted an article earlier but nobody seemed interested in the slightest so fwiw....

The Nassau Guardian
you have to close an eye on the English a little, but it has actually evolved quite a bit.

Waves,
"Fared" because I would not be able to watch tv until later. I'm very limited on this computer re clicking on links.

Also, I know that the storm is wide and slow movning . . . . and that the Bahamas is getting pounded now. . . . . . . we won't have good word on the aftermath untiil later today.

Default I may be lucky.

There's a cold front coming in from the north west, and it may push that hurricane away from where I am,unless it turns into a perfect storm.

I think that things will be OK here where I am. The storm does have a big whirl around it. I just went to (Noaa Radar),and clicked on satellite, and then moved the mouse arrow over water vapor, and saw that the swirl of the clouds upper top are almost reaching the North Carolina coast.

Mari, and BlueCarGal,I hope that you all will be safe where you are. BF

Unhappy

Mari,

i hope you guys don'g get hit too hard by the storm. sorry if i seemed harsh. nobody knows where i'm coming from and that is not supposed to be a joke.

Steve,

i hope that cold front shoves the hurricane away from you... and out to sea more.

-----------------

EVERYONE

i probably will avoid further posting to this thread at least for a good while. it is too triggering for me - and my recent posts seem to be compeltely useless to others. maybe it's just my perception because i am not in a good state. althemore reason - not a good thing for me to be here.

i hope everyone in the potential line of fire from Irene is safe.

bye

Default Battening down the hatches!!!!!!!!

OMG ALL THOSE WINDOWS AND TREES!!

Hey, I am in Burlington County, NJ, where they are expecting EXTREME conditions tomorrow and Sunday. Right now, the so-called 'calm' before the storm, it's warm and very muggy outside. We have been preparing for Irene here. I'm pretty worried, because my yard, once it slopes down, is FULL of big, tall trees ! Not only that, but we have TONS of windows in this house, all double paned, thank goodness. We took all three of our patio tables and the 18 chairs, umbrellas, etc, into the garage.

TREES!!!

On top of all this, I am alone in this house until sometime tomorrow around noon. My son and d-i-l are at a wedding this afternoon and tonight, and the grandkids are at her parents' house. Luckily, they should be home before the worst of it hits! I am planning to go visit my DH in the hospital this evening, and then it's 'home sweet home', probably through the whole week-end.

Default For everyone in Irene's path:

Marianne Williamson's "Prayer for the Home" from Illuminata (1994)

Dear God,
May this house be a sacred dwelling for those who live here.
May those who visit feel the peace we have
received from you.
May darkness not enter.
May the light of god shield this house from harm.
May the angels bring their peace here and
use our home as a haven of light.
May all grow strong in this place of healing,
our sanctuary from the loudness of the world.
May it so be used by You forever.
Amen.

Good luck Jacquie,
I'm happy you will have the son and dil with you.
Do you have what we call a safe room --- a designated room like a bathroom that is an inside room away from the windows? Back up your computer and unplug before the storm.

->>The worst part of the storm is waiting for it to arrive and then waiting for it to pass. Board games? Books? . . . .You can get through it.

The weather after the storm will be absolutely gorgeous for a day or two. You can look forward to that.
