Hi everyone. thank you all for thinking of me.

Kay, i might have to get screened for B12 just to make sure it's safe to do the folic acid. but i've no reason to suspect B12 deficiency so i probably won'd do that right away. for your vit D - make sure to get vit D3 over the counter. if you get the prescription stuff it will be D2 in the US, which is not nearly as good.

----

the pdoc appointment went well. ranted about medical system. he told me some horror stories he's run across in his practice too. talked about some other personal stuff that is going on and which i think contributed to the depression.

hi

thanks Bizi and Bobby that was sweet of both of you.

this happens sometimes with Zoloft. at least it doesn't last all day only for maybe a couple of hours. it will clear up probably once i get used to the dosage.

we didn't have any fresh ginger but i stuck some of the dried powdered stuff in my mouth... it helped some.

Curious Waves

Because you had to take the dosage at a different time than usual. Did
you get something to eat with it. THis was something that I had to
make sure Derrick always did with his.

Dear Donna

those are both very good points. the time, as well as the food.

well, the time shift occured as of monday, and i moved the dose forward by about 6 hours (from 6 am to noon). the reason was because at 6 i couldn't eat. i waited until i could eat, to take it. in subsequent days i had my labs coming so i had to take it later anyway... i just kept taking around noon since. so yes, i have been taking it with food (always). and the time got pushed forward, but permanently.

zoloft can be taken with or without food. but food changes (increases) the way it is absorbed. so it should always be taken the same way - either always fed, or always on empty stomach.

food does seem to reduce the odds of nausea for some reason. i don't think it's because of irritation, think it's more to do with serotonergic activity in the stomach... not sure though. so when i start zoloft, and until i'm used to it i always take it with food.

once i have got to a dose that works, and am not having nausea with food, i might try to switch to taking it without food (easier). but at doses > 100 mg i've found that i pretty much need food with it to avoid the nausea.

I do take D3, as I found out on another forum that the script stuff is really D2. I was on 10,000iu a week of the script stuff, but only have to take 5,000iu of D3 now.
I also take sublingual methyl B12 because it's better absorbed. I do 5,000iu of that 3 times a week. The good thing, is that excess B12 will exit the body through urination.
Low levels of folic acid in men has been linked to increased risk of stroke...

I was on zoloft for a long time. Some docs said to take it at night, others in the morning (I was taking a single dose). I did notice I had a lot of nausea, especially as my dose increased. I usually took it with fat free milk, and this helped. My PCP put me on prilosec twice a day, but I was able to d/c that after I had my gallbladder removed.

Hang in there I hope you start feeling better soon.

Red face

Well, good news. no nausea yesterday. only a mean ol' migraine.

i realized that the day before, when i had the nausea i had a good bit more to eat than usual, at the same time as the Zoloft. maybe just a coincidence or maybe it contributed. food increases the absorption a little but it raises peak level quite a bit also. kinda weird how that works. the other thing is, i had an aura. the nausea came afterwards, but no headache. so maybe it was not the Zoloft at all. maybe it was a subtle migraine.

today we'll see. i only ate an anchovy sandwich (last of them!) but i am still hungry, so i may eat something else.

Kay.....

i'm so sorry you had all that trouble with Zoloft! i had a similar situation with Celexa - doc gave me something for nausea, but i understand it is really pretty common with Celexa. with Zoloft i only had nausea sporadically, mostly at doses 150+ mg. i've always been given it once a day too, both in the US and in Europe... but i read recently that in Canada, Zoloft is given THREE times a day??? sheesh! at a starting dose of 150mg???? whoa!!! can you believe that???? i would never take that much as a starting dose!!! (maybe that doesn't include titration... maybe it is a starting-target dose? ... i hope... those poor people... )

oh as far as when to take it, my first doctor said morning with food (for absorption). current one didn't specify but when we started i was inpatient and they gave it with lunch. the first psychiatrist did say that it can interfere with sleep but also help sleep, depending on when you take it and that most do best taking it in the morning. so, i imagine slow metabolizers might do better taking it at night on an empty stomach because they'd be awake by the time it peaked.
