Default Trying to save New Orleans by letting the small towns flood

Bizi,
Lots and lots of hugs.
That's a lot of emotional strain for the people in the Missippi River Basin.
Stay safe. Keep taking care of yourself.

1.
Here is is a video from someone from Vicksburg Mississippi:
2011 Flood of Vicksburg, Mississippi
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FHKeFXLNFkk
Those pictures were taken several days ago maybe a week ago. The water is higher now.

Flooding 2011 at Greenville, MS River Bridge- Looking South
This guy is narrating and explaining about the large volume of water -- pictures taken almost a week ago. Here is his blog -- he might update it in a few days: http://buddyhuggins.blogspot.com/201...-ms-river.html

FLooding worries continue in Louisiana
From CNN on May 16, 2011
Expecting 10 to 15 feet of water.

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-0...tens-ruin.html

Quote:
The National Weather Service had forecast the Mississippi would be passing Baton Rouge at a rate of 1.62 million cubic feet per second on May 22, according to Colonel Ed Fleming, commander of the corps’s New Orleans office. The levees in Baton Rouge are designed to withstand 1.5 million cubic feet, he said.
Quote:
The extra water is going through the Morganza into the Atchafalaya basin to spare the state capital and New Orleans, raising the specter of historic flooding in Cajun country during the next 10 days, said the weather service.
Quote:
So far this year, the Mississippi and its tributaries have flooded nearly 2.5 million acres in Arkansas, Tennessee, Missouri, Mississippi and Louisiana, according to state and farm industry sources.

WOW, I have been watching for days just waiting for the river to crawl back where it came from. Thanks for the links.
I remeber some years ago how wide and all the flooding. Wondered how the families, farms were able to recoup.
Just saw the gates open for the control flooding and can not believe the power.

Heart

Bizi,
The slow moving water might mean that the flooding will not be as bad as anticipated:

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/05/17/us/17floods.html
Slow Pace of Flooding Might Lower Its Crest

Quote:
ATLANTA — Floodwater that is moving slower than anticipated and a conservative hand on the floodgates is easing some of the concern in a nervous Louisiana.
Quote:
On Monday, the new models from the Army Corps showed water was moving more slowly than it did in 1973, the last time the area that encompasses the heart of Cajun country was intentionally flooded to divert water from a dangerously high Mississippi River.

Unlike 1973, on which the original forecast was built, the ground is much drier and is absorbing more water.

Also, a large system of commercial crawfish ponds, with their own protective levees, has been built since the corps last flooded the basin nearly 40 years ago. Those ponds and much heavier brush are further slowing the flow of water.

Doesn't the federal gov't help tornado victims who live on the flat-land hot spots, and are well aware of the risks?
Thanks for the info. Very interesting.
I hope the damage is as little as possible. These poor people... they will be in my prayers.
